George Salmon
George Salmon FBA FRS FRSE (25 September 1819 – 22 January 1904) was a distinguished and influential Irish mathematician and Anglican theologian. After working in algebraic geometry for two decades, Salmon devoted the last forty years of his life to theology. His entire career was spent at Trinity College Dublin. Personal life Salmon was born in Dublin, to Michael Salmon and Helen Weekes (the daughter of the Reverend Edward Weekes), but he spent his boyhood in Cork City, where his father Michael was a linen merchant. He attended Hamblin and Porter's School there before starting at Trinity College in 1833. In 1837 he won a scholarship and graduated from Trinity in 1839 with first-class honours in mathematics. In 1841 at the age of 21, he attained a paid fellowship and teaching position in mathematics at Trinity. James Salmon (1873–1924)
James Salmon (13 April 1873 – 27 April 1924) was a Scottish architect, who practiced mainly in Glasgow. With his partner John Gaff Gillespie developed an attenuated high-rise style for the office buildings of the fin de siecle cities. One of his most famous buildings is the category-A listed "The Hatrack" (1899–1902) in St Vincent Street, a heavily glass-fronted Modern Style (British Art Nouveau style) tower, remarkable in execution for its day. This building was only recently rescued from demolition. Salmon was born in Glasgow, the son of architect William Forrest Salmon (1843–1911) and Jessie Alexander, and grandson of architect James Salmon (1805–1888). James Salmon (1805–1888)
James Salmon (1805-1888) was a Scottish architect, active chiefly in Glasgow and the west of Scotland. Salmon served his apprenticeship with John Brash, who between 1823 and 1829 designed the houses of Glasgow's Blythswood Square. Salmon would no doubt have been involved with the work. One of the great architectural opportunities of 19th century Glasgow came in the opening up of whole new areas for development and the freedom to design them. This was the opportunity Brash had with Blythswood Square. James Salmon's chance came with the planning of the new suburb of Dennistoun. In 1854, he planned an area of ornamental villas and self-contained houses mixed with terraces and open spaces. Unfortunately, very little of this came about since the area was too near the industrial heart of the city to become popular. By 1861, Salmon's plans had been discarded. Sir Isidore Salmon CBE DL JP (10 February 1876 – 16 September 1941) was a British businessman and Conservative Party politician. Early life He was the son of Barnett Salmon, and his wife Helena Gluckstein, the daughter of Samuel Gluckstein. They were the co-founders of Salmon & Gluckstein tobacconists. Henry Salmon
Henry Salmon (14 March 1910 – 30 July 1944) was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Millwall, Southport, and Stoke City. Career Salmon was born in Fenton and played with local clubs Stoke St Peter's, Longton Hall and Macclesfield Town before joining Stoke City in 1932. He played three matches for Stoke scoring once in a 4–0 win against Oldham Athletic in the 1932–33 season as Stoke won the Second Division title. He left at the end of the season for London club Millwall and suffered relegation. He returned north to play for Wellington Town, Southport and Shrewsbury Town. Harvey Wallis Salmon (January 26, 1839 – April 27, 1927) was a U.S. politician from Missouri. Biography He was born in Greenville County, South Carolina. As a child, he re-settled in Morgan County, Missouri. At the age of 13, he was employed as a store clerk in Versailles, Missouri. In 1859, he entered into a partnership with his brother to establish a general store. During the first year of the American Civil War, he served in the Missouri State Guard. He returned to Morgan County, serving as a Confederate Army recruiter when he was captured by Union forces and held for ten months. Harry Morrey Salmon CBE MC DL (1892 – May 1985) was a Welsh naturalist famed for his work in his own country and for his bird photography. Career He started his career as a photographer in 1909, joined the Cardiff Naturalists' Society in 1910, and had become a published author by 1914. He was hailed as the "Welsh ornithologist of the century" and as "the father of British bird photography." His photographic career started in 1908. He was the first to record the nocturnal activities of Manx Shearwater on the Pembrokeshire Islands and in 1924 he achieved another first by using his skill with a camera in choppy seas to obtain a census of the large colonies of Gannet on Grassholm.
