(26 February 1799 – 24 December 1870) was a mercenary soldier and landowner in Middlesex and the Irish counties Limerick and Armagh. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and sometime British Resident in the Grisons. He was also known as ''Hieronimus, Gerolamo, Geronimo, Harry, Jerome the grandfather'' and ''Monsieur le Comte de Salis''. He is the founder of the English branch of the ''de Salis'' (or ''Fane de Salis'') family which produced a number of politicians, diplomats, officers and clerics. Early life He was born on 8 July 1709 in Chur, capital of the Grisons, then an independent republic whose rule extended into present-day Italy, including the areas of Chiavenna and the Valtellina. He would be the only surviving son of Colonel Peter de Salis- Soglio (1675–1749), by his wife Margherita (1678–1747), daughter of Hercules de Salis-Soglio. 	Jerome, 4th Count De Salis-Soglio Jerome de Salis, Count de Salis-Soglio, DL, JP, FRS (14 February 1771 – 2 October 1836), ''Illustris et Magnificus'', was an Anglo-Grison noble and Irish landowner. Life Jerome, Count de Salis-Soglio, was the eldest surviving son of Peter De Salis and his third wife, Ann, daughter of Bundespresident Antonio de Salis. Born in Chiavenna on 14 February 1771, he died on 2 October 1836 at Dawley Lodge, Harlington, and lies buried in the ancient church of St Peter and St Paul, Harlington, London, which was at the time in Middlesex. Life He was the eldest son of Count Peter John de Salis by his second wife Cecile Henrietta Marguerite, daughter of David Bourgeoise of Neuchâtel. After some education in London (Harrow) he was an Attaché in Turin (October 1845-December 1849). Lived at Hillingdon. He was a JP for Middlesex. Diplomatic career After being educated at Eton (1877–1882, Edward Compton Austen Leigh's house) he was nominated an attaché in the diplomatic service on 20 November 1886.
