Salim (Thai Slang)
In contemporary Thai politics, ''salim'' ( th, สลิ่ม, ) is a Thai slang referring to people who are sceptics of democracy and supports the military's involvement in politics. Politicist Surachart Bamrungsuk saw ''salim''s as representatives of right wing middle class. The term initially referred to the " multicoloured shirts" as a reference to the colourful Thai dessert ''sarim'' and was considered by some as a pejorative. It later included other people outside the "multicoloured shirts" as well. The term has been used on mainstream media by 2011. In late February 2020, the term gained popularity following the Thai Constitutional Court's order to disband the pro-democracy Future Forward Party. Students, seeing the order as a political abuse, began to use hashtags including the term ''salim'' as their online activism against the ruling. Until 22 May 2014, the politics of Thailand were conducted within the framework of a constitutional monarchy, whereby the Prime Minister of Thailand, prime minister is the head of government and a Hereditary monarchy, hereditary monarch is head of state. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislative branches. Following 2014 Thai coup d'état, the coup d'état of 22 May 2014 revoking the 2007 constitution, a military organization called National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) had taken over administration. The chief of NCPO abolished the national assembly and assumed the responsibilities of the legislative branch. Under the martial law enforced throughout the kingdom, military courts have been tasked to be responsible for some cases that are normally under the civilian courts. Pantip.com is a popular Thai-language website and discussion forum. As of July 2016, Pantip.com one of the top 10 websites in Thailand and 712 worldwide. Discussions about Thai politics and current events on Pantip.com's topic boards are often cited in the Thai press, particularly in such English-language newspapers as the ''Bangkok Post'' and ''The Nation'', as a gauge of the public's mood about various issues. At the beginning, the site gained its popularity from people's misunderstanding of its name which is similar (and identical in English) to Bangkok's format IT shopping center, Pantip Plaza, but it is in no way affiliated with the mall. Rajabhat University System
The Rajabhat Universities (, ) mean normal universities in Thailand. They were formerly called ''Rajabhat Institutes'' and originally formed the teachers college system. In 2005, King Bhumibol Adulyadej collectively elevated them to be universities. Many provinces have one—there are 38 total—and they are generally easier to gain admission to than the public universities (formerly the government universities). Most Rajabhat Universities offer graduate degrees, some even to the doctoral level. Enrollments have been shrinking. , students numbered 540,000, down from 600,000. These institutions are equivalent to British polytechnics that have become universities. They face a similar challenge of matching the prestige of older institutions. Nidhi Eoseewong ( th, นิธิ เอียวศรีวงศ์, , ; also rendered ''Nithi Aeusrivongse'', ''Nithi ‘Īaosīwong'', and ''Nithi ʻĪeosīwong''; born May 8, 1940) is a prominent Thai historian, writer, and political commentator. Biography Nidhi Eoseewong was born on 8 May 1940, to an ethnic Chinese family in Chiang Mai, Thailand. He studied at Assumption College Sriracha in Chonburi Province, and went on to earn bachelor's and master's degrees in history from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. Upon graduation, he accepted a position teaching history at Chiang Mai University, where he would go on to spend the majority of his professional career.
