Salem – I Assembly Constituency
Salem-I is a former state assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu. History Until 2008, the city of Salem was part of the Salem I and Salem II assembly constituencies. Since 1977, the ADMK party won the Salem I assembly seat five times (1977, 1980, 1984, 2001 and 2006); Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won twice (1989 and 1996), and the Indian National Congress (INC) won in 1991. The constituencies of Salem were redrawn as Salem North, Salem South and Salem West Salem West or 'Salem (West)' is a state assembly constituency in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu that was formed after the constituency delimitations of 2007. 1991 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Election
The tenth legislative assembly election of Tamil Nadu was held on 24 June 1991. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) – Indian National Congress (INC) alliance won the elections in a landslide and AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa became the chief minister. This was her first term in office. The united strength of AIADMK (after the merger of Jayalalithaa and Janaki Ramachandran and R M Veerappan faction, who was made Joint General Secretary of AIADMK]), the alliance with the Congress, and the wave of public sympathy in the wake of Rajiv Gandhi assassination combined to produce a massive victory for the AIADMK.
