Salem Lutheran Church is an LCMS (Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod) church in Farrar, Missouri. Name The community was founded in 1859 and was known as Salem, and the Lutheran church was known by the same name. In 1892, R. P. Farrar, the owner of Farrar General Store, made a request for a post office. However, he would discover that the name Salem had already been taken. Due to an already existing Salem in Missouri, the soon-to-be postmaster Farrar used his name as a temporary solution, which became permanent. Despite the community's name change, the church continued to be known as Salem. Farrar is an unincorporated community in Salem Township in eastern Perry County, Missouri, United States. It is located eight miles east of Perryville, ninety miles south of Saint Louis and 3.7 miles from the Mississippi River. History The original German-Saxon settlement was known as Salem and was centered on the Salem Lutheran Church built in 1859. In 1890, R.P.Farrar opened the Farrar General Store. Originally, mail had been brought in from the nearby town of Schalls and handed out on the church steps after Sunday services, until 1892 when R.P.Farrar rode by horseback to Jefferson City to make a request for a post office. Upon arriving, he learned that the name Salem had already been taken. Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod
The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), also known as the Missouri Synod, is a traditional, confessional Lutheran denomination in the United States. With 1.8 million members, it is the second-largest Lutheran body in the United States. The LCMS was organized in 1847 at a meeting in Chicago, Illinois, as the German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States (german: Die Deutsche Evangelisch-Lutherische Synode von Missouri, Ohio und andern Staaten), a name which partially reflected the geographic locations of the founding congregations. Longtown, Missouri
Longtown is a village in Union Township in Perry County, Missouri, United States. The population was 90 at the 2020 census. History Some of the earliest Europeans to put down roots in the area were English and Scotch-Irish Presbyterian settlers from Rowan, Iredell, Cabarrus, and Mecklenburg counties in North Carolina who settled to the south in Brazeau in 1817. Soon after, in 1821, they were followed by English and Scotch-Irish Methodists also hailing from North Carolina, settling in the present area of Longtown. Among the earliest families were the Abernathys, Farrars, and Rutledgers. These settlers were part of a large exodus from the Piedmont region of North Carolina following the War of 1812. Uniontown, Missouri
Uniontown is an unincorporated community located in Union Township in southeastern Perry County, Missouri, United States. It is situated on U.S. Route 61, ten miles southeast of Perryville. Etymology Uniontown was originally known as Paitzdorf, and was named after the same village in Greiz county in Thuringia, Germany, from where many of the settlers originated. However, Paitzdorf became known as Uniontown during the Civil War era, as it served as an encampment for Union soldiers. The Union soldiers could not pronounce the name of the town, and therefore referred to it as Uniontown. History Originally known as Paitzdorf, Uniontown is one of seven towns and villages in the area founded by the Rev. C. F. Gruber Auswanderung (Emigration) Group of Saxon-German immigrants in 1839.
