Salem, Bastrop County, Texas
Salem is an unincorporated community in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The town is one of 17 communities named Salem in the state. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History Originally called St. Philip's Colony, the agricultural community was first populated by slaves freed following the Civil War. Since it was paired with the white town of Jeddo, it is unclear how many people lived in Salem. St. Philip's Church and several houses were already in existence when the school was built. The religious denomination of the church is unknown. St. Philips Church and several houses have marked Salem on county maps from the 1940s to the 2010s, but no population estimates are available. Smithville Independent School District
Smithville Independent School District is a public school district based in Smithville, Texas (USA). Located in Bastrop County, in which it serves Smithville and Rosanky, a small portion of the district extends into Fayette County. In 2009, the school district was rated "academically acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency. Smithville ISD is in the service area of Austin Community College. Bastrop () is a city and the county seat of Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,688 according to the 2020 census. It is located about southeast of Austin and is part of the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History Spanish soldiers lived temporarily at the current site of Bastrop as early as 1804, when a fort was established where the Old San Antonio Road crossed the Colorado River and named ''Puesta del Colorado''. Jeddo, Texas
Jeddo is an unincorporated community in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 75 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History The community was founded in 1874 when a post office was established. Five years later the community was described as a thriving village. In 1890 the population was estimated at twenty, and Jeddo had one general store. Population estimates took an unexplained rise later in the decade, with 560 reported in 1896 and 559 in 1904. But the community quickly faded to a population of twelve in 1914, then dropped from population lists until about 1933, when ten people and two businesses were reported. The post office closed in 1927. From 1939 to 2000 the population was estimated at seventy-five. The Jeddo Cemetery was founded in 1865. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau.
