Salehy
Salehy is a small municipality situated at the mouth of the Mangoro River on its north side at a distance of 10 km from Mahanoro, on the East coast of Madagascar. The village of Ambodiharina lies across the Mangoro River from Salehy. Industry People there are living principally on fishing, agriculture, handicraft, “betsa” manufacturing (an alcoholic traditional beverage) and a small part of tourism. People in Salehy, same as people from many villages in Madagascar, nowadays, are living in extreme poverty. Geography The village is surrounded by water, by the Canal des Pangalanes to the west, Mangoro River to the south, and Indian Ocean to the east, preceded by a small natural swimming pool called “Dobo masina”, meaning “Salted pool”. The water is salty because of the ocean, as it can reach that body of water during the night even a kilometer inland. Ambodiharina
Ambodiharina is a municipality in the Mahanoro District, Atsinanana Region, Madagascar. The 2001 population of the municipality was 20,217. It is located near the coast and on the south side of the mouth of the Mangoro River, and south of Mahanoro (the chief city of the district). The village of Salehy lies across from the town on the north side of the river. Atsinanana
Atsinanana is a coastal region in eastern Madagascar. It borders Analanjirofo region in the north, Alaotra-Mangoro in the west, Vakinankaratra and Amoron'i Mania in the southwest, and Vatovavy and Fitovinany in south. The region contains over 285km of coastline, which includes many beaches and cultural heritage sites. Atsinanana is known for its fish breeding and fishing near its ports, ore claims and mining activity, as well as its agriculture. The capital of the region is Toamasina, and the population was 1,484,403 in 2018. The area of Atsinanana is , almost exactly the same as its neighbor, Analanjirofo. The Mangoro River is the largest river on the east coast of Madagascar by basin size and water volume, and is 300 km in length. Canal Des Pangalanes
The Canal des Pangalanes is a canal that consists of a series of natural rivers, waterways and human-made lakes that extends for over and runs down the east coast of Madagascar from Mahavelona to Farafangana. It is used primarily for transportation and fishing, and it has unspoiled natural beaches that are visited by tourists. An initial area of the canal in Toamasina (unofficially and in French referred to as Tamatave) is straight, while subsequent areas have curves, lagoons, connected lakes and swamps.
