Saldus
Saldus (; german: Frauenburg) is a Latvian town located in Courland ( lv, Kurzeme) and is the main town, and the central location in Saldus Municipality. The name Saldus has been noted in historical sources as far back as the mid-13th century, but the founding year is considered to be 1856, and it gained town rights in 1917. The city is almost precisely in between Riga and Liepāja (slightly closer to ‘Liepāja’ (100 km), than Riga (119 km). River Ciecere flows through Saldus, and it is a tributary to one of Latvia’s biggest rivers Venta. The city is often referred to as "the Bowl of Courland". This is because of a famous quote by Māris Čaklais: "A drop of honey in the bowl of Courland". The reasoning behind the quote is the fact that from a high point, the city looks like a crater. Saldus Municipality ( lv, Saldus novads) is a municipality in Courland, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2021 by merging Saldus Municipality (2009-2021) and Brocēni Municipality. Saldus Municipality contains 19 Parishes and 2 Towns. Saldus Art School
Saldus Art School () is an art school in Saldus, Latvia founded in 1984. Approximately 130 students from the age of eight to sixteen attend the school after their lessons in contemporary school three times a week. Learning process Saldus Art school is an educational establishment. The seven-year curriculum consists of drawing, painting, sculpture, introduction to the language of art, composition and work with material. Students take part in nature studies - green practice in June every summer. They make their graduation pieces in the last semester of the 7th school year - wall paintings, ceramics, mosaics, paintings on silk, graphics and other artworks in public places. Janis Rozentāls
Janis Rozentāls (March 18, 1866 – December 26, 1916) was a famous Latvian painter. Life Rozentāls was born in Bebri Farmstead, Saldus parish, Courland Governorate in the Russian Empire. He was the son of a blacksmith. He received the basic education at H.Krause's Elementary School in Saldus and Kuldīga District School. At the age of fifteen he left for Riga aiming to achieve his dream of becoming an artist, later attending Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts. During his free time the artist would visit his hometown to get away from the bustle of a large city, as well as to paint scenes of the surrounding nature and take on commissions of portraits. For his diploma works he mostly painted portraits using young Latvian students or local farmers as his subjects. Arturs Šingirejs (born 10 April 1984 in Saldus), better known as Dons, is a Latvian singer and songwriter. He is one of the most popular singers in Latvia, having won the Latvian Music Recording Awards' Top Radio Hit award six times for most played song. He has released eight solo albums and has won numerous awards including Latvijas Radio's Muzikālās Banka () Song of the Year four times. He has attempted to represent Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest twice with the songs "Freedom is my Religion" (2010) and "Pēdējā Vēstule" (2014), finishing in second both times. He has used the stage names Art Green and Art Singer while performing outside of Latvia. Jānis Blūms
Jānis Blūms (born 20 April 1982) is a former Latvian professional basketball player. Standing at , Blūms played both point guard and shooting guard positions. He also served as the captain of the Latvian national basketball team. Player career Blūms started his career with Brocēni and later continued to play in their successor Skonto. In 2003, he signed with Polish club Anwil Włocławek, where he spent one season before returning to Latvia, where he joined BK Ventspils. After two years in Ventspils, Blūms joined Lithuanian powerhouse BC Lietuvos rytas. In 2007, Blūms accepted offer from Italian side Eldo Napoli where he had a decent season. Māris Čaklais (16 June 1940 – 13 December 2003) was a Latvian poet, writer, and journalist. Biography Čaklais studied journalism at the University of Latvia until 1964; his first publications appeared in 1960. He translated to Latvian Bertolt Brecht, Paul Celan, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, and Rainer Maria Rilke, among others. He also wrote the lyrics, which were set to Imants Kalniņš' music in the movie directed by Rolands Kalniņš, ''Four White Shirts'' and Ferenc Molnár's play "Liliom". Courland
