Salatyn Asgarova
Salatyn Aziz qizi Asgarova (also spelled Salatyn Askerova; az, Salatın Əziz qızı Əsgərova; 16 December 1961 – 9 January 1991) is a National Hero of Azerbaijan. She was one of the Azerbaijani journalists killed in the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. Life Salatyn Aziz qizi Asgarova was born on 16 December 1961 in Baku, Azerbaijan. After finishing secondary school, she entered Azerbaijan Oil and Chemistry Institute. However, her enormous interest in literature brought her into journalism. She started her journalistic career at “Baku” newspaper, and then began working as a special correspondent for ''Molodezh Azerbaijana'' (''The Youth of Azerbaijan''). Prior to the beginning of the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, Salatyn was writing about contemporary issues of society. Martyrs' Lane or Alley of Martyrs ( az, Şəhidlər Xiyabanı), formerly known as the Kirov Park, is a cemetery and memorial in Baku, Azerbaijan dedicated to those killed by the Soviet Army during Black January 1990 and in the First Nagorno-Karabakh War of 1988–1994. History In the closing days of World War I, fighting broke out in Baku as a result of the Russian Civil War, with four groups fighting for control of the area when the Russian Empire collapsed. Fighting each other were the Bolsheviks, Mensheviks, Armenians and Azeris. Many people were killed in the fighting including some from a small British force sent to prevent Baku falling into the hands of the Russians. The National Hero of Azerbaijan ( az, Azərbaycan milli qəhrəmanı) is the highest national title in the Republic of Azerbaijan. The title was named on 25 March 1992, and the "Qizil Ulduz" Medal awarded as a sign of receiving this title was established by a separate law in 15 July 1992. The law on the title has been in effect since 25 December 1995. It can only be awarded once to the same person.
