Salamanca (Seneca: ''Onë:dagö:h'') is a city in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States, inside the Allegany Indian Reservation, one of two governed by the Seneca Nation of New York. The population was 5,929 at the 2020 census. It was named after José de Salamanca, a Spanish nobleman and cabinet minister of the mid-19th century. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of , of which is land and , or 3.88%, is water. Salamanca is within the Allegany Indian Reservation of the Seneca Nation of New York (one of the six tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy). The city population of about 5,900 is about 19% Native American; this does not include Seneca people living in the nearby hamlets of Jimerson Town (one of the two capitals of the nation) and Kill Buck. The Seneca Nation of Indians is a federally recognized Seneca tribe based in western New York. They are one of three federally recognized Seneca entities in the United States, the others being the Tonawanda Band of Seneca (also in western New York) and the Seneca-Cayuga Nation of Oklahoma. Some Seneca also live with other Iroquois peoples on the Six Nations of the Grand River in Ontario. The community is located along New York State Route 417 and U.S. Route 219 Business, sharing its western border with the eastern border of the city of Salamanca. Kill Buck is named after Daniel Kill Buck (or, by another source, Dave Kill Buck), who was a mayor of the community during its days as a Seneca village. Kill Buck is roughly evenly divided, with the northern half of the hamlet within the jurisdiction of the town of Great Valley and the southern half within the bounds of the Allegany Indian Reservation; Routes 219 and 417 roughly demarcate the dividing line. Allegany State Park is a state park in western New York State, located in Cattaraugus County just north of the Allegheny National Forest in Pennsylvania. The park is divided into two sections: The Red House Area and the Quaker Run Area. It lies within the Allegheny Highlands forests ecoregion. Jimerson Town, New York
Jimerson Town (also spelled Jimersontown and given the Seneca language name tsyo:nya:tih) is a native planned community on the Allegany Indian Reservation within the bounds of Cattaraugus County, New York. Along with Irving on the Cattaraugus Reservation, Jimerson Town is one of two capitals of the Seneca Nation of Indians. The United States Census Bureau does not recognize the community and no population estimates are available. At the time of its founding in the 1960s, the community was developed with 145 residences, each on one-acre plots. It has been developed with several facilities since the 1980s.
