Sakhumzi Somyo
Sakhumzi Stoffels Somyo (born 1960) is a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress, he was elected to the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature in 2014. He was then appointed as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) responsible for the Finance, Economic Development, Environment and Tourism portfolio. In 2018, he was fired as an MEC. Somyo was elected to Parliament in 2019. Soon after, he was elected Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Auditor General. Early life and education Somyo was born in 1960. He matriculated from Jabavu High School. He completed a 3-year Teacher's Diploma at the Cape College of Education in Fort Beaufort. Somyo holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree and an Executive Management Certificate from the University of Fort Hare. He is busy completing his Master of Public Administration degree at Fort Hare. Nthabiseng Pauline Khunou
Nthabiseng Pauline Khunou (born 21 December 1969) is a South African politician from the Free State. She represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2003 to 2019 and formerly served in the Free State Provincial Legislature. Political career Born on 21 December 1969, Khunou was a student activist and later served as a local councillor in the Motheo District Municipality. In the 1999 general election, she was elected to an ANC seat in the Free State Provincial Legislature. However, she served less than a term in her seat; in 2003, she was transferred to the National Assembly to fill a casual vacancy. 2014 South African General Election
General elections were held in South Africa on 7 May 2014, to elect a new National Assembly and new provincial legislatures in each province. It was the fifth election held in South Africa under conditions of universal adult suffrage since the end of the apartheid era in 1994, and also the first held since the death of Nelson Mandela. It was also the first time that South African expatriates were allowed to vote in a South African national election. The National Assembly election was won by the African National Congress (ANC), but with a reduced majority of 62.1%, down from 65.9% in the 2009 election. South African Energy Crisis
The South African energy crisis is an ongoing period of widespread national blackouts of electricity supply. It began in the later months of 2007 and continues to the present. The South African government-owned national power utility and primary power generator, Eskom, and various parliamentarians attributed these rolling-blackouts to insufficient generation capacity. According to Eskom and government officials, the solution requires the construction of additional power stations and generators. South African National Assembly
The National Assembly is the directly elected house of the Parliament of South Africa, located in Cape Town, Western Cape. It consists of four hundred members who are elected every five years using a party-list proportional representation system where half of the members are elected proportionally from nine provincial lists and the remaining half from national lists so as to restore proportionality. The National Assembly is presided over by a Speaker, assisted by a Deputy Speaker.
