Sainte-Chapelle (choir)
The Sainte-Chapelle was the name for the ''chapelle'', the men of the clerical and musical institution which attached to the building, the Sainte-Chapelle (built 1243–1249), in Paris. The establishment of the Sainte-Chapelle royale consisted of a treasurer, canons, and ''college'' - the members of which may have overlapped with the choir and instrumentalists. However, following the dissolution of the musical establishment in the French Revolution, the term Sainte-Chapelle after 1803 applies only to the building. Cappella The distinction between the men and the building comes from the original meaning of French ''chapelle'', as with Italian ''cappella'' or Spanish ''capilla'', to mean a choral establishment, rather than the building where the priests, singers and instrumentalists of the ''chapelle'' were based. Sainte-Chapelle
The Sainte-Chapelle (; en, Holy Chapel) is a royal chapel in the Gothic style, within the medieval Palais de la Cité, the residence of the Kings of France until the 14th century, on the Île de la Cité in the River Seine in Paris, France. Construction began sometime after 1238 and the chapel was consecrated on 26 April 1248. The Sainte-Chapelle is considered among the highest achievements of the Rayonnant period of Gothic architecture. It was commissioned by King Louis IX of France to house his collection of Passion relics, including Christ's Crown of Thorns – one of the most important relics in medieval Christendom. This was later held in the nearby Notre-Dame Cathedral until the 2019 fire, which it survived. Along with the Conciergerie, Sainte-Chapelle is one of the earliest surviving buildings of the Capetian royal palace on the Île de la Cité. Claudin De Sermisy
Claudin de Sermisy (c. 1490 – 13 October 1562) was a French composer of the Renaissance.Isabelle Cazeaux, "Claudin d Sermisy", "The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians", ed. Stanley Sadie. 20 vol. (London, Macmillan Publishers Ltd., 1980). Along with Clément Janequin he was one of the most renowned composers of French chansons in the early 16th century; in addition he was a significant composer of sacred music. His music was both influential on, and influenced by, contemporary Italian styles. Biography Sermisy was most likely born either in Picardy, Burgundy, or Île-de-France, based on the similarity of his surname to place names there. Hugh III, Duke Of Burgundy
Hugh III (1142 – August 25, 1192) was Duke of Burgundy between 1162 and 1192. As duke, Burgundy was invaded by King Philip II and Hugh was forced to sue for peace. Hugh then joined the Third Crusade, distinguishing himself at Arsuf and Acre. He died at Acre in 1192. Life Hugh was the eldest son of Duke Odo II and Marie, daughter of Theobald II, Count of Champagne. The rule of Hugh III marked the ending of a period of relative peace in the duchy of Burgundy. Hugh was a belligerent man and soon was involved in conflicts against King Louis VII of France over their borders. When Philip Augustus succeeded Louis in 1180, Hugh seized the opportunity and forced several men to change their allegiance to Burgundy. Pierre Certon
Pierre Certon (ca. 1510–1520 – 23 February 1572) was a French composer of the Renaissance. He was a representative of the generation after Josquin and Mouton, and was influential in the late development of the French chanson. Life Most likely he was born in Melun,Aimé Agnel/Richard Freedman, Grove but he lived most of his life in Paris. The earliest records of his life date from 1527, when he was in the service of the king. In 1530 he was charged with playing ball at Notre Dame Cathedral as well as refusing to go to a service, both dangerous irreverences that almost cost him prison time—but he was young enough to be forgiven. From this event a birthdate between 1510 and 1520 can be inferred. Nicolas Formé
Nicolas Formé (Paris 26 April 1567 27 May 1638) was a French composer. In 1587, aged 20, Formé joined the choir of the Sainte-Chapelle, but was excluded from the fraternity for drunkenness and womanising. He was reinstated in 1592, to the Chapelle royale, and then finally, with the support of King Louis XIII, in 1626 he returned to the Sainte-Chapelle as a canon, where he worked under the protection of the King until his death. Formé paid no attention to publishing his works and all his secular works are lost. The sacred works which survive were preserved in the private archive of the French crown. Marc-Antoine Charpentier
Marc-Antoine Charpentier (; 1643 – 24 February 1704) was a French Baroque composer during the reign of Louis XIV. One of his most famous works is the main theme from the prelude of his ''Te Deum'', ''Marche en rondeau''. This theme is still used today as a fanfare during television broadcasts of the Eurovision Network, the European Broadcasting Union. Marc-Antoine Charpentier dominated the Baroque musical scene in seventeenth century France because of the quality of his prolific output. He mastered all genres, and his skill in writing sacred vocal music was especially hailed by his contemporaries. He began his career by going to Italy, there he fell under the influence of Giacomo Carissimi as well as other Italian composers, perhaps Domenico Mazzocchi.
