St. Karapet Monastery of Aprakunis ( hy, Ապրակունիսի Սուրբ Կարապետ վանք), was an Armenian Apostolic monastery, in the Julfa District, Julfa district of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic), near the village of Əbrəqunus, Aprakunis. History It was founded by the Crimea, Crimean monk Malakia (:hy:Մաղաքիա Ղրիմեցի, hy) in 1381. Gathering students, he invited Hovhan Vorotnetsi (:ru:Ованес Воротнеци, ru) and Gregory of Tatev, Grigor Tatevatsi to establish the Aprakunyats higher type school in the monastery, the first head scholar of which was Hovhan Vorotnetsi. The construction of the monastery was completed by Grigor Tatevatsi, who after the death of Hovhan Vorotnetsi in 1386 replaced him as the head scholar, and in 1391, due to the invasion of Timur, was forced to leave Yernjak. Əbrəqunus
Əbrəqunus (''Əbrəqunis'', ''Əbrəkunis'', and ''Abragunus'') or Aprakunis () is a village and municipality in the Julfa District of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan. It has a population of 2,747. History A legend connects the settlement's name to an Armenian patriarch named Arbak. A medieval Armenian monastery called Saint Karapet Monastery of Aprakunis, Surp Karapet was located in Abrakunis. It stood intact but in a state of disrepair until shortly before 2005, when it was demolished. The main church in the monastery was built in 1381 over the ruins of a previous church. Internally, it was a domed basilica with four piers. The lower parts of the church were built with cut stone, but the dome and its tall drum were of brick and from a later repair. The interior had Persian-style frescoes from the 1740s. On the exterior walls were various relief carvings, crosses, eagles, etc. Beside the south wall was a small chapel dedicated to St. Stephanos.
