Saint John Cemetery (Union County, South Dakota)
St. John Cemetery is a Catholic cemetery located in Prairie Township, Union County, South Dakota. The cemetery is one of four adjacent cemeteries, which are a mile south and a mile east of Beresford, South Dakota. Of these four, St. John is the cemetery which is farthest west. The earliest known burial is that of a child named Felix Phillip Mangan in 1886. As of 2001, the remains of more than 700 individuals were interred at St. John Cemetery. Union County is the southernmost county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 16,811, making it the 13th most populous county in South Dakota. Its county seat has been Elk Point since April 30, 1865. Originally named Cole County, its name was changed to Union on January 7, 1864, because of Civil War sentiment. Beresford (; ) is a city in Lincoln and Union counties in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The population was 2,180 as of the 2020 census. The southern two-thirds is part of the Sioux City, IA- NE-SD Metropolitan Statistical Area, while the northern one-third is part of the Sioux Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.
