Saint Helena () is a British overseas territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is a remote volcanic tropical island west of the coast of south-western Africa, and east of Rio de Janeiro in South America. It is one of three constituent parts of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. Saint Helena measures about and has a population of 4,439 per the 2021 census. It was named after Helena, mother of Constantine I. It is one of the most remote islands in the world and was uninhabited when discovered by the Portuguese enroute to the Indian subcontinent in 1502. For about four centuries the island was an important stopover for ships from Europe to Asia and back, while sailing around the African continent, until the opening of the Suez canal. The Kshatrapa, Andhra and Gupta started curving the bottom vertical line coming up with a -look-alike. The Nagari continued the bottom stroke to make a circle and enclose the 3-look-alike, in much the same way that the sign @ encircles a lowercase ''a''. As time went on, the enclosing circle became bigger and its line continued beyond the circle downwards, as the 3-look-alike became smaller. Soon, all that was left of the 3-look-alike was a squiggle. The Arabs simply connected that squiggle to the downward stroke at the middle and subsequent European change was purely cosmetic. Christine Scipio-O'Dean
Christine Scipio-O'Dean (born 1971St Helena GovernmentChristine Scipio-O’Dean(2018)) is a politician from Saint Helena, who was a supporter of the approval of same-sex marriage in Saint Helena. Career Scipio-O'Dean was first elected councillor in 2012, as a result of a by-election after the resignation of Tara Thomas, and became one of two women councillors alongside Bernice Olsson. Prior to her political career she worked as a teacher and in finance administration. She was re-elected in 2013, and was appointed Executive Councillor for Education. In 2014 she attended the 60th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, held in Cameroon. In 2017 she was re-elected to the Legislative Council and was appointed as Chair of the Education Committee and Member of the Economic Development Committee. Politics of Saint Helena takes place in a framework of limited self-government as a dependent territory of the United Kingdom, whereby the Governor is the head of government.
