Saint Anthony Catholic Church (Honolulu)
Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Honolulu is a parish in the West Honolulu Vicariate Forane of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu. History The Catholic faith was brought to Kalihi about 1840 when Brother Calixtus built an altar in a rented store for Sunday Mass. The parish was canonically erected in 1916, when Father Ulrich Taube, SS.CC., built the first wooden church that was consecrated that same year under the title of Saint Anthony of Padua by Msgr. Libert H. Boeynaems, SS.CC., Vicar Apostolic of the Hawaiian Islands. Father Ulrich commuted daily from the downtown Honolulu rectory at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace, serving the faithful of Kalihi Kai until his resignation due to illness in 1927. Msgr. Stephen Alencastre, SS.CC., Vicar Apostolic, appointed Father Hubert Nijs, SS.CC., as the second pastor of the parish. A parish is a territorial entity in many Christian denominations, constituting a division within a diocese. Missionaries Of La Salette
The Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette (M.S. - Missionarium Saletiniensis) are a religious congregation of priests and brothers in the Latin Church. They are named after the apparition of Our Lady of La Salette in France. There is also a parallel religious community of sisters called the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of La Salette. A lay fraternal group of associates also works in cooperation with the vowed religious. The Missionaries are dedicated to making known the message of Our Lady of La Salette, a call to healing of inner brokenness and personal reconciliation with God, especially as found in the first three commandments. John Joseph Scanlan
John Joseph Scanlan (May 24, 1906 – January 31, 1997) was an American Prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the second bishop of the Diocese of Honolulu in Hawaii from 1968 to 1981. He previously served as an auxiliary bishop of the same diocese from 1954 to 1968. Biography Early life John Scanlan was born on May 24, 1906 in Iniscarra in County Cork, Ireland. He trained at All Hallows College in Dublin. Scanlan was ordained by Bishop John Francis Norton for the Archdiocese of San Francisco on June 22, 1930 in Dublin. After his ordination, Scanlan served in pastoral positions at parishes in Oakland, Berkeley and San Jose. He directed the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Men and taught religion in high school.
