''To Be and To Have'' (french: Être et avoir; also the UK title) is a 2002 French documentary film directed by Nicolas Philibert about a small rural school. It was screened as an "Out of Competition" film at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival and achieved commercial success. The film became the subject of an unsuccessful legal action by the school's teacher, who said that he and the children's parents had been misled about the film's intended audience, and that he and the children had been exploited. The documentary's title translates as "to be and to have", the two auxiliary verbs in the French language. It is about a primary school in the commune of Saint-Étienne-sur-Usson, Puy-de-Dôme, France, the population of which is just over 200. Usson, Puy-de-Dôme
Usson () is a commune in the Puy-de-Dôme department in Auvergne in central France. History Usson's castle, demolished under the order of the cardinal of Richelieu, was before, from 1585 to 1605 the residence of Marguerite de Valois (1553–1615), called The Queen Margot, first spouse (1572–1599) of the French king Henri IV. According to Revel's drawing made in 15th century, the fortress must have been big (triple surrounding, 20 towers) as well as feared. We clearly understand the Richelieu might have seen a threat for its central authority. The castle's moto, was: ''Garde le traître et la dent'' (Beware the traitor and the tooth). In other words, such impregnable fortress only had one threat to deal with : traitors or starvation. Auvergnat Dialect
or (endonym: ) is a northern dialect of Occitan spoken in central and southern France, in particular in the former administrative region of Auvergne. Currently, research shows that there is not really a true Auvergnat dialect but rather a vast northern Occitan linguistic area. The word "Auvergnat" is above all a local historiographical creation. According to linguist Jean Roux, "It is by simplification that we use this term, because in no case Auvergnat can be considered as an autonomous linguistic entity". With around 80,000 speakers in the Auvergne region at the beginning of the 21st century, it is considered to be severely endangered.
