Saint-Michel-des-Saints, Quebec
Saint-Michel-des-Saints is a municipality in the Matawinie Regional County Municipality of Quebec, Canada. Agriculture, forestry, recreation, and tourism have been the main activities found within this region. History In 1863, Thomas-Léandre Brassard settled near the falls of Pine Lake (''Lac des Pins'') where he built a mill and a manor. Three years later, there were 136 inhabitants. In 1870, the post office opened. By 1883, the Parish of Saint-Michel-des-Saints was officially formed and followed two years later in 1885 by the formation of the parish municipality. The name Saint-Michel-des-Saints, chosen by Ignace Bourget at the suggestion of Father Brassard, honours Michael de Sanctis who lived from 1591 to 1625. In 1929, the dam on the Matawin River was constructed that would result in the formation of the Taureau Reservoir. This reservoir drowned the neighbouring village of Saint-Ignace-du-Lac (founded in 1877) and so that municipality was annexed by Saint-Michel-des-Saints ... Ignace Bourget
Ignace Bourget (October 30, 1799 – June 8, 1885) was a Canadian Roman Catholic priest who held the title of Bishop of Montreal from 1840 to 1876. Born in Lévis, Quebec, in 1799, Bourget entered the clergy at an early age, undertook several courses of religious study, and in 1837 was named co-adjutor bishop of the newly created bishopric of Montreal. Following the death of Jean-Jacques Lartigue in 1840, Bourget became Bishop of Montreal. During the 1840s, Bourget led the expansion of the Roman Catholic Church in Quebec. He encouraged the immigration of European missionary societies, including the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, the Jesuits, the Society of the Sacred Heart and the Good Shepherd Sisters. He also established entirely new religious communities including the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, Sisters of Saint Anne, Sisters of Providence, and the Institute of Misericordia Sisters. Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board
The Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board (SWLSB, french: Commission scolaire Sir-Wilfrid-Laurier, CSSWL) is a school board headquartered in Rosemère, Quebec in Greater Montreal. It officially came into existence in July 1998 when English-language schools from eight former school boards were amalgamated. Taureau Reservoir
The Taurus Reservoir is a reservoir in Matawinie, in the administrative region of Lanaudière, Québec, Canada. It is in the Saint Lawrence River drainage basin and is on the Matawin River. Toponymy The reservoir is named after a river rapid that was flooded in 1931 by the damming of Matawin River by Shawinigan Water and Power. The noise of the latter was reminiscent of the bellowing of a bull. Geography This large lake has of banks including many sandy beaches, including the beach of Pointe-fine located at the end of a peninsula that just into the centre of the lake. Sandy shores of "Baie du milieu" (bay of the Middle), and "des Embranchements" and "du Poste" attract wilderness camping and swimming fans. Matawin River (Quebec)
The Matawin River is a river, flowing from west to east through the administrative regions of Lanaudière and Mauricie, in Quebec, Canada. Matawin River is the main tributary of the Saint-Maurice River. Other major tributaries are the rivers Vermillion and Manouane, for which their respective mouth is located North of La Tuque. On its way, the Matawin River feeds mainly the Taureau Reservoir which is surrounded by the Regional Park of Taureau Lake.
