Saint-Laurent () is a Montreal borough, borough of the city of Montreal, Canada, located in the northern part of the Island of Montreal, island. Although it is no longer an independent city, it is still commonly known as Ville Saint-Laurent (''City of Saint-Laurent'') or by its initials, ''VSL''. Saint-Laurent is the largest of Montreal's boroughs by land area. Its population was 98,828 inhabitants in 2016. History The history of Saint-Laurent begins in the end of the 17th century with the settling of the lands given by Paul de Chomedey, Sieur de Maisonneuve, Maisonneuve, first governor of Montreal, then by the Society of the Priests of Saint Sulpice, Sulpicians, lords of Montreal's island, to Jean Descarie. His three sons were the first to settle on the lands of Cote Saint-Laurent in 1687. Saint-Laurent-de-l'Île-d'Orléans () is a municipality in the Capitale-Nationale region of Quebec, Canada, part of the L'Île-d'Orléans Regional County Municipality. It is situated on the south side of Orléans Island. Prior to June 6, 1998 it was known simply as Saint-Laurent. Saint-Laurent has been twinned with Tourouvre in France since 1982. History The area began to be colonized around 1660. The parish of Saint-Paul was one of four new parishes founded in 1679 on Île d'Orléans. The place near where the church for this parish was built in 1895 was also known as l'Arbre Sec, in reference to a withered tree in the western end of the Île d'Orléans seigneurie.Poirier, J.
