Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce
Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce is a city in the Municipalité régionale de comté Beauce-Centre in Quebec, Canada. It is part of the Chaudière-Appalaches region and the population was 5,014 as of the Canada 2021 Census. The new city constitution dates from 1999, when the city of Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce and the parish municipality of Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce amalgamated. However, the territory was settled as a ''seigneurie'' in 1736 under Pierre de Rigaud de Vaudreuil, which makes it the oldest settlement in Beauce. In 1747, Vaudreuil would exchange it to Joseph de Fleury de La Gorgendière, who would initiate the development of the settlement. Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce is the seat of the judicial district of Beauce. Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce holds an annual Truck drag race event, the ''Accélération de camions à St-Joseph-de-Beauce'' (Big Rig Drag Racing) which established in 2004. Beauce-Centre is a regional county municipality in the Chaudière-Appalaches region of southeastern Quebec, Canada. It is located on the Chaudière River, between La Nouvelle-Beauce Regional County Municipality and Beauce-Sartigan Regional County Municipality. Established in 1982 as the successor to Beauce County under the name Robert-Cliche, Beauce-Centre is made up of ten municipalities and is mainly French-speaking. The territory is a mix of urban and rural. Beauceville, the county seat, is the most populated municipality. Henri Sévérin Béland
Henri Sévérin Béland, (October 11, 1869 – April 22, 1935) was a Canadian parliamentarian. Born in Rivière-du-Loup-en-Haut, Quebec (now Louiseville), the son of Henri Béland and Sophie Lesage, he studied medicine at Université Laval. He practiced medicine in New Hampshire before moving to Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce, Quebec. During World War I, he was a doctor in Belgium and held by the Germans as a prisoner of war for three years. From 1897 to 1899, he was the mayor of Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce. In 1897, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec as a Liberal in the riding of Beauce. He was acclaimed in 1900. He resigned in 1902 to run federally. In a 1902 by-election, he was acclaimed as a Liberal Member of Parliament in the riding of Beauce. He was re-elected in 1904 and 1908. Lucien Lessard Jr. (born May 26, 1980), known as Junior Lessard, is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who last played for the Thetford Mines Isothermic of the LNAH. Playing career As a youth, Lessard played in the 1993 and 1994 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments with a minor ice hockey team from Beauce, Quebec. Lessard attended the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he led the NCAA in goals (32) and points (63) as a senior during the 2003–04 season, numbers that would be good enough to win the Hobey Baker Award. He also led the WCHA in the same categories with 19 goals and 39 points in conference play. Beauce is a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 1867. In 2006, it had a population of 103,617 people, of whom 82,123 were eligible voters. The Beauce riding has the highest percentage of people who answered "Canadian" as their ethnic origin in the 2006 Census (84.0%; multiple responses).
