Saint-Jacques Parish, New Brunswick
Saint-Jacques is a civil parish in Madawaska County, New Brunswick, Canada. The parish consists of two discontiguous portions separated by Saint-Joseph Parish. For governance purposes the southwestern portion is divided between the city of Edmundston, which includes the tier of grants on either side of the Madawaska River, and the Northwest rural district; the northeastern portion is part of the rural district. Both city and rural district are members of the Northwest Regional Service Commission. Before the 2023 governance reform, the parish was divided between Edmundston and the local service district of the parish of Saint-Jacques, part of which was annexed by Edmundston in the reform. Origin of name The parish is named for the local Roman Catholic church. History Saint-Jacques was erected in 1877 from Madawaska Parish; the name was spelt without a hyphen. The Canadian province of New Brunswick is divided by the ''Territorial Division Act'' into 152 parishes, units which had political significance as subdivisions of counties until the Municipalities Act of 1966. Parishes still exist in law and include any municipality, rural community, or regional municipality within their borders. Edmundston Airport is located northwest of Edmundston, New Brunswick, Canada along the east bank of the Madawaska River. The airport is unique among Canadian airports in that its runway straddles the interprovincial border between New Brunswick and Quebec and is located in Patrieville, New Brunswick in Madawaska County and Dégelis, Quebec in the Témiscouata Regional County Municipality. The airport is classified as an airport of entry by Nav Canada and is staffed by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
