The Saigon Heat is a Vietnamese professional basketball team based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam founded in 2016. It is the developmental team of the Saigon Heat. The team currently competes in the Vietnam Basketball Association, Vietnam's first professional basketball league. History Following the completion of the 2015–16 season, the Heat announced the formation of Vietnam's first professional basketball league, the Vietnam Basketball Association, where they would field a developmental team. The Heat VBA team consists of local players, with several of the ABL side's players being distributed among the other VBA teams for league parity. The Vietnam Basketball Association ( vi, Giải bóng rổ chuyên nghiệp Việt Nam), often abbreviated as VBA, is a Vietnamese national professional basketball league founded in 2016. History The formation of the VBA was announced by charter team Saigon Heat following their completion of the 2015–16 ASEAN Basketball League season. Leading up to the inaugural season, the VBA expected 6 teams would compete in the new league. However, only 5 teams were officially unveiled. To oversee league operations, the VBA looked to the Philippines to find someone with an extensive basketball background. Tonichi Pujante was named the inaugural league commissioner. In January 2020, the VBA announced that the upcoming season would feature one additional team located in the province of Khanh Hoa on the Southern Coast of Vietnam. 2016 VBA Season
The 2016 VBA season is the inaugural season of the Vietnam Basketball Association. The regular season began on August 6, 2016 and ended on October 23, 2016. The playoffs began on October 26, 2016 and ended with the 2016 VBA Finals on November 16, 2016, with the Danang Dragons winning the inaugural VBA title after sweeping the Hochiminh City Wings in 2 games. 2021 VBA Season
The 2021 VBA season was the sixth season of the Vietnam Basketball Association. The regular season began on 10 July but was canceled on 27 August due to a new surge of the COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam. The season was scheduled to start on 4 June, with the regular season and postseason set to be played in bubbles in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. However, the start was postponed due to a surge of the Delta variant of COVID-19. Teams All seven teams from the 2020 season returned. The Vietnam national team was added as the eighth team to help prepare for the 2021 SEA Games. Tony Garbelotto
Anthony Garbelotto (born 2 January 1969) is an English basketball coach who coaches the NSH Mountain Gold Timika of the Indonesian Basketball League Coaching career Garbelotto started his coaching career with hometown club London Towers in 1992, as an assistant coach, leaving the post just two years later. In 1997 he joined up with the England team set-up where he was again an assistant coach, before being promoted to head coach of the Under-23 team in 1998. In 1998, Garbelotto accepted a job in Iceland, taking the reins of Úrvalsdeild club KFÍ, where he stayed for two years, also jointly coaching the Great Britain Students team in 1999. The 2015–16 ASEAN Basketball League season was the sixth season of competition of the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL). The regular season started on 27 October 2015 and ended on 21 February 2016.
