Saiful Islam Duke
Saiful Islam Duke is a retired Lieutenant Commander of Bangladesh Navy. He is the nephew of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Career Duke was a retired Lieutenant Commander of Bangladesh Navy. He worked as the Personal Secretary to Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Duke and his brother in law, Directorate General of Forces Intelligence officer Lieutenant Colonel Saiful Islam Joarder were charged with involvement in the 2004 Dhaka grenade attack on former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He is accused of aiding Maulana Tajuddin, main supplier of the grenades used in the attack and member of terrorist groups based in Pakistan, in fleeing Bangladesh. he along with the other accused were indicted on 19 March 2012. Duke was arrested on 27 August 2010 by the Criminal Investigation Department. He is currently being tried for his role in the attacks. He had secured bail in the case in 2014. Khaleda Zia (; born Khaleda Khanam Putul in 1945) is a Bangladeshi politician who served as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh from March 1991 to March 1996, and again from June 2001 to October 2006. Saiful Islam Joarder
Saiful Islam Joarder is a former Bangladeshi Army officer later who became fugitive due to his involvement for help to escape Tajuddin, the prime suspect of 2004 Dhaka grenade attack. He is believed to be in Bangladesh. Career Joarder was a Lieutenant Colonel who worked in Directorate General of Forces Intelligence, military intelligence of Bangladesh. 2004 Dhaka Grenade Attack
The 2004 Dhaka grenade attack took place at an anti-terrorism rally organised by Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue on 21 August 2004. The attack left 24 dead and more than 500 injured. The attack was carried out at 5:22 pm after Sheikh Hasina, the leader of opposition had finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck. The attacks targeted Awami League president Sheikh Hasina. Hasina was injured in the attack. Events and casualties Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina had been speaking at a public meeting on Bangabandhu Avenue, protesting blasts against the party's workers in Sylhet. The rally drew a crowd of 20,000 people. As Hasina finished her speech, a total of 13 grenades were thrown into the crowd from the rooftops of nearby buildings, killing at least 16 people on spot, later the death toll reached 24.
