Saginaw Valley State University
Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) is a public university in University Center, Michigan in Saginaw County. It was founded in 1963 as Saginaw Valley College. It is located on in Saginaw County's Kochville Township, approximately north of downtown Saginaw. Saginaw Valley State is the newest of Michigan's 15 public colleges and universities. SVSU offers over 100 academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels with approximately 8,500 students at its main campus in University Center. Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) is a competitive List of NCAA conferences, college athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the NCAA Division II, Division II level. The GLIAC was founded in June 1972. Its eleven member institutions are located in the Midwestern United States in the states of Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin. There are three affiliate members who compete in the GLIAC for sports not sponsored by their home conference. Sponsorship of American football, football was dropped by the GLIAC after the 1989 season. Conference schools sponsoring football joined with members of the Heartland Football Conference to form the Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC), which began play in 1990. NCAA Division II (D-II) is an intermediate-level division of competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). It offers an alternative to both the larger and better-funded Division I and to the scholarship-free environment offered in Division III. Harvey Randall Wickes Memorial Stadium, known simply as Wickes Stadium, is a 6,800-seat football stadium located in Kochville, Michigan and is a part of the Ryder Center sports complex on the Saginaw Valley State University campus. It is home to the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals football team. The Cardinals compete at the NCAA Division II level as a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Wickes Stadium can also be used for other events, including high school football, graduation ceremonies, and soccer. It is named for Harvey R. Wickes, one of the founders of SVSU. Renovation Wickes Stadium underwent a major renovation in the summer of 2011.
