Safari Records was a British independent record label based in London, England, and operating between 1977 and 1985. Safari Records was formed early in 1977 by Tony Edwards (former co-manager of Deep Purple), Andreas Budde (the son of German music publisher Rolf Budde) and John Craig who previously ran Purple and Oyster Records. With the label's founders living in Paris, Berlin and London respectively, the plan was to develop a pan-European record company that would release pop records. An independent record label (or indie label) is a record label that operates without the funding or distribution of major record labels; they are a type of small- to medium-sized enterprise, or SME. The labels and artists are often represented by trade associations in their country or region, which in turn are represented by the international trade body, the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN). Many of the labels started as producers and distributors of specific genres of music, such as jazz music, or represent something new and non-mainstream, such as Elvis Presley in the early days. Glenn Hughes (British Musician)
Glenn Hughes (born 21 August 1951) is an English bassist and singer, best known for playing bass and performing vocals in funk rock band Trapeze and in the Mk. III and IV line-ups of Deep Purple, as well as briefly fronting Black Sabbath in the mid-1980s. He is known by fans as "The Voice of Rock" due to his soulful and wide-ranging singing voice. In addition to being an active session musician, Hughes also maintains a notable solo career. He currently fronts the supergroups Black Country Communion and The Dead Daisies, and fronted California Breed from 2013 to 2015. In 2016, Hughes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Deep Purple. Early life Hughes was born in Cannock, Staffordshire, England, on 21 August 1951. Purple Hearts (UK Band)
Purple Hearts are an English mod revival band, formed in 1977 in Romford, eastern Greater London. They were often considered one of the best English mod revival groups, the ''NME'' calling them "one of the few mod bands to actually cut it on rock 'n' roll terms". Career Purple Hearts started in 1977, when teenagers Jeff Shadbolt, Simon Stebbing, Bob Manton, and Nick Lake formed the band in Romford as The Sockets, before they even knew how to play their instruments. They formed for the purpose of getting a support slot at a Buzzcocks gig at the East London Polytechnic, to debut their tongue-in-cheek rock opera, ''Reg''. In 1978, their drummer Nick Lake broke his leg. He was replaced by Gary Sparks from Romford punk outfit, 1348. "I Want to Be Free" is a song by the English people, English new wave music, new wave band Toyah (band), Toyah, fronted by Toyah Willcox, released as a single in May 1981 by Safari Records. The song promoted Toyah's 1981 studio album ''Anthem (Toyah album), Anthem'' and was a Top 10 chart hit in the UK and Ireland. Background The song was written by Toyah Willcox and Joel Bogen, and produced by Nick Tauber. Willcox explained that it "resonated how I felt about school years which was still very strongly with me even when I was 22". It is about Toyah's frustration as a Dyslexia, dyslexic teenager when she was, as she said, "being forced not to be myself, my natural self". Genocide (band)
Repulsion is an American grindcore band from Flint, Michigan, founded in 1984. History Matt Olivo and Scott Carlson, with bassist Sean MacDonald, formed Tempter in 1984, a metal act covering Bay Area thrash metal bands, such as Slayer and Metallica. The group's sound became increasingly infused with hardcore punk when Phil Hines, of Flint hardcore punk band Dissonance, joined as a drummer. They juggled band names, first renaming themselves Ultraviolence and then Genocide before recording their first demo in 1984. In spite of their growing popularity in the underground Genocide struggled to survive and faced difficulty maintaining a consistent lineup. In the summer of 1985 Chuck Schuldiner, of pioneering death metal act Death, invited Carlson and Olivo to Florida to complete the Death lineup. Gary Holton
Gary Frederick Holton (22 September 1953 – 25 October 1985) was an English singer-songwriter, musician and actor from London. He was the frontman of the band Heavy Metal Kids (1972–1977), worked with Casino Steel (1981–1984), and played the part of Wayne (a.k.a. London) in the UK television comedy ''Auf Wiedersehen, Pet'' (1983–1985). Holton died from an overdose of morphine combined with alcohol in 1985. ''Toyah! Toyah! Toyah!'' is a live album by the English new wave band Toyah, fronted by Toyah Willcox, released in 1980 by Safari Records. Background The album was recorded on 17 June 1980 at the Lafayette Club in Wolverhampton, using the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio. The concert was also filmed by ATV as part of a TV documentary about the band and its eponymous singer. It aired on 18 December 1980. A live version of "Danced" was released as a single at the end of 1980 to promote the album. ''Toyah! Toyah! Toyah!'' reached number 22 on the UK Albums Chart and number 3 on the UK Independent Albums Chart, and was subsequently certified silver in the UK in 1981 for selling more than 60,000 copies. ''The Blue Meaning'' is the second studio album by the English new wave band Toyah, fronted by Toyah Wilcox, released in 1980 by Safari Records. It reached the Top 40 on the UK Albums Chart. Background The album was recorded at the Parkgate Studios in Battle, East Sussex and mixed at the Marquee Studios in London. The album's title comes from blue being one of Toyah's favourite colours, which the singer finds deeply spiritual, with multiple cultural associations. The album cover features a photo taken by Gered Mankowitz at night in front of a Gothic mansion Wykehurst Place, located in Bolney near Brighton. I Can't Control Myself
"I Can't Control Myself" is a song by English rock band the Troggs, released as a single in September 1966. It continued their success after " Wild Thing" and "With a Girl Like You", becoming a top-ten hit in a number of countries. Release and controversy "I Can't Control Myself" was written by the Troggs lead vocalist Reg Presley and after several days of rehearsing in their home town Andover, the Troggs recorded the song on 24 August 1966 at Olympic Studios in London. It then released a month later as the first single on Page One Records, which had been co-founded by the band's manager and producer Larry Page. A continuing dispute in the US over the distribution of the Troggs' releases meant that "I Can't Control Myself" was simultaneously released by Atco and Fontana in September 1966.
