''Sad Sad Sack World'' (also known as ''Sad Sad Sack'') is an American comic book series, published by Harvey Comics. The series ran from October 1964 to December 1973; in all, 46 issues were released.''The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide'', 2014-2015 edition, p. 891. The series featured characters from the '' Sad Sack'' comic series, created by George Baker. The series was a "giant-size" Harvey comic for most of its run. Issues #1 (October 1964) to 31 (June 1971) were 68 pages; issues #32 (September 1971) to 39 (October 1972) were 52 pages. The title was a standard-size comic (32-36 pages) for the remainder of its run. ''Sad Sad Sack World'' was a quarterly publication for most of its run. The series became a bi-monthly by mid-1972. Harvey Comics
Harvey Comics (also known as Harvey World Famous Comics, Harvey Publications, Harvey Comics Entertainment, Harvey Hits, Harvey Illustrated Humor, and Harvey Picture Magazines) was an American comic book publisher, founded in New York City by Alfred Harvey in 1941, after buying out the small publisher Brookwood Publications. His brothers, Robert B. and Leon Harvey, joined shortly after. The company soon got into licensed characters, which by the 1950s, became the bulk of their output. The artist Warren Kremer is closely associated with the publisher. Harvey Comics' most notable characters are Casper the Friendly Ghost and Richie Rich (character), Richie Rich. Harvey's mascot is named Joker, a harlequin jack-in-the-box character. ''Sad Sack'' is an American comic strip and comic book character created by Sgt. George Baker during World War II. Set in the United States Army, ''Sad Sack'' depicted an otherwise unnamed, lowly private experiencing some of the absurdities and humiliations of military life. The title was a euphemistic shortening of the military slang "sad sack of shit", common during World War II. The phrase has come to mean "an inept person" or "inept soldier". Comic strip Originally drawn in pantomime by Baker, ''The Sad Sack'' debuted June 1942 as a comic strip in the first issue of ''Yank, the Army Weekly''. George Baker (May 22, 1915 – May 7, 1975) was a cartoonist who became prominent during World War II as the creator of the popular comic strip '' The Sad Sack''. The 1957 comedy film '' The Sad Sack'' starring Jerry Lewis was based on Baker's fictional character. Biography Early life and education Baker was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, living there until 1923. He grew up in Rock Island, Illinois, and Chicago. In Chicago, he attended Lane Tech High School and graduated from Roosevelt High, where he played baseball and drew pictures for the high school annual.
