''Sad but True'' is the debut studio album by Australian rock band Tex, Don and Charlie. It was released in November 1993. It spent 6 weeks in the Australian charts, peaking at number 40. In 2010, it was listed in the book, ''100 Best Australian Albums''. Content In early 1992, Don Walker, Charlie Owen, James Cruickshank and Tex Perkins played an acoustic live performance for alternative radio station JJJ. All were already well known within the Australian music industry. Tex, Don and Charlie are an Australian supergroup formed by Tex Perkins, Don Walker and Charlie Owen. Their first studio album ''Sad but True'' was released in 1993, two others were released in 2005 and 2017. Career The band was founded in 1992 as Tex Perkins recalls "I saw Charlie and thought 'Jesus Christ'. He was easily the best rock guitar player I had seen. He was really dexterous, but gutsy. Not flashy. I think it had a lot of jazz in him as well. I made a mental note that I'd like to work with Charlie and about one year later I heard he was playing with Don Walker in Catfish. Then somebody suggested I do something with Don Walker and I said 'Sure, as long as Charlie Owen is there'." "Blind Willie McTell" is a song written and performed by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. Named for the blues singer of the same name, the song was recorded in the spring of 1983, during the sessions for Dylan's album ''Infidels''; however, it was ultimately left off the album and did not receive an official release until 1991, when it appeared on ''The Bootleg Series Volumes 1–3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961–1991''. It was also later anthologized on ''Dylan'' (2007). Composition and recording The song's melody is loosely based on the jazz standard "St. James Infirmary Blues". For the version included on '' The Bootleg Series Vol. 1-3'', Dylan plays piano and is accompanied only by Mark Knopfler on acoustic guitar. Warren Ellis (born 14 February 1965) is an Australian musician and composer. He is a member of the rock groups Dirty Three and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. He also performed with the band Grinderman until its disbandment in 2013. He has also composed film scores with long-time friend, collaborator and band-mate Nick Cave. He has worked in various groups including The Scientists, Beasts of Bourbon, Kim Salmon and the Surrealists, Kim Salmon and the Business, and Darling Downs.
