Sacred Heart Church (Lombard, Illinois)
Sacred Heart Church is a Roman Catholic church located in Lombard, Illinois. It is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Joliet in Illinois. History The church was founded by 54 families in 1912, with the first services held at the Lincoln School house. The first pastor was Father Boecker. In 1958, the church was rebuilt, and was dedicated in 1959 as a permanent church. In January 2002, a new Parish Center was dedicated on the location where the parish's convent had been located since 1925. The parish hosts an annual Germanfest, which started in 1968 as a small picnic event. Each year, 30 to 40 thousand people attend the festival, which is the longest-running outdoor festival in the western suburbs of Chicago. In 2016 and 2017, the band 7th Heaven performed at the festival. In 2012, the church held the funeral for inventor Eugene Polley. Lombard, Illinois
Lombard is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, United States, and a suburb of Chicago. The population was 43,165 at the 2010 census. The United States Census Bureau estimated the population in 2019 to be 44,303. History Originally part of Potawatomi Native American landscape, the Lombard area was first settled by Americans of European descent in the 1830s. Lombard shares its early history with Glen Ellyn. Brothers Ralph and Morgan Babcock settled in a grove of trees along the DuPage River. In what was known as Babcock's Grove, Lombard developed to the east and Glen Ellyn to the west. In 1837, Babcock's Grove was connected to Chicago by a stagecoach line which stopped at Stacy's Tavern at Geneva and St. Charles Roads. Fertile land, the DuPage River, and plentiful timber drew farmers to the area. Sheldon and Harriet Peck moved from Onondaga, New York, to this area in 1837 to farm of land. 7th Heaven is a Chicago, Illinois-based rock band created by guitarist Richie Hofherr, Tony Di Giulio, and Michael Mooshey. Formed in 1985, it has continued up to present day with changing band members. The band was named by co-founder Michael Mooshey in 1985. The band name 7th Heaven was named after the line "we'll be right in 7th heaven" from the song "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley & His Comets. About 7th Heaven is currently managed by NTD Management and signed to NTD Records. They were previously managed by Alec John Such of Bon Jovi and James Young of Styx in 1997-1998. They have sold 100,000 CDs to date. Their acclaimed ''Silver'' 30-tracks double CD released in 2004 was a popular release. Eugene Polley (November 29, 1915 – May 20, 2012) was an electrical engineer and engineering manager for Zenith Electronics who invented the first wireless remote control for television. Life and career Eugene J. Polley was born November 29, 1915, in Chicago, Illinois. He attended the City Colleges of Chicago and Armour Institute of Technology, but he left before graduating. In 1935, he was hired as a stock boy for Zenith Electronics; he moved to the company's parts department, where he created the company's first catalog, then transferred to engineering, where his assignments included work on radar during World War II for the U.S. Department of Defense. His 1955 invention, marketed as the Flash-Matic, used visible light to remotely control a television outfitted with four photocells in the cabinet at the corners of the screen. Sacred Heart School was a Catholic elementary school located in Lombard, Illinois. The school was part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Joliet in Illinois. The school holds many activities for students, including an annual runathon and spelling bee. History Sacred Heart School was established in 1912, with the first class of 30 students being taught in a barn owned by local resident Martin Hogan. In 1913, the school's first elementary school building was built. The school was originally run by the School Sisters of St. Francis The School Sisters of St. Francis (abbreviated SSSF) are an international religious congregation of Catholic sisters, part of the Third Order of Saint Francis, founded in 1874 in New Cassel, Wisconsin.
