Sacramento Mountain Lions
The Sacramento Mountain Lions was a professional American football team based in Sacramento, California that played in the United Football League. The franchise originated as the California Redwoods, and played its home games in San Francisco and San Jose before relocating to Hornet Stadium in Sacramento in 2010, then to Raley Field in West Sacramento in 2012. The team was coached by Dennis Green for three of its four years of existence. Amid financial problems, the UFL folded in the middle of the 2012 season. California State University, Sacramento (CSUS, Sacramento State, or informally Sac State) is a public university in Sacramento, California. Founded in 1947 as Sacramento State College, it is the eleventh oldest school in the 23-campus California State University system. Hartford Colonials
The Hartford Colonials, originally the New York Sentinels, were a professional American football team that played in the United Football League in its 2009 and 2010 seasons. A charter member of the UFL, the Sentinels began play in 2009 nominally representing New York City but playing its home games in three stadiums, none of which were in the city proper: Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut; Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, New York (on Long Island); and the now-demolished Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. 2012 Sacramento Mountain Lions Season
The Sacramento Mountain Lions season was the fourth and final season for the United Football League franchise. Offseason In July, the Sacramento Mountain Lions were known to be considering a move to Raley Field, a baseball park in West Sacramento, California. The Mountain Lions, 2011's attendance leader, played their previous two seasons at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento. At a press conference at Raley Field on August 6, the move to West Sacramento was confirmed. Two games were played there before the league folded. Dennis Green, who had coached the Mountain Lions since 2009, when they were the California Redwoods, did not return as head coach in 2012. On August 6, Turk Schonert was announced as the new head coach. The 2010 Sacramento Mountain Lions season was the second season for the Sacramento Mountain Lions and the first since relocating from the San Francisco Bay Area. The team finished with a 4–4 record and third in the league. Offseason After unusually poor attendance at the California Redwoods' 2009 home games (the team was the only one to not have a single game with an attendance of over 10,000 fans), the Redwoods announced they would be leaving AT&T Park in San Francisco for either San Jose, California or Sacramento, California. 2009 California Redwoods Season
The 2009 California Redwoods season was the first and only season for the California Redwoods. In the United Football League's Premiere Season, the team finished with a 2–4 record and in third place. This team is now known as the Sacramento Mountain Lions. Draft The draft took place on June 19, 2009. Those selected were among participants in earlier workouts held in Orlando as well as Las Vegas. Once a player was picked by a team, his rights were held by that team should he elect to play in the UFL. Pacific Coast League
The Pacific Coast League (PCL) is a Minor League Baseball league that operates in the Western United States. Along with the International League, it is one of two leagues playing at the Triple-A level, which is one grade below Major League Baseball (MLB). The PCL was one of the premier regional baseball leagues in the first half of the 20th century. Although it was never recognized as a true major league, to which it aspired, its quality of play was considered very high. A number of top stars of the era, including Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, were products of the league. Sacramento River Cats
The Sacramento River Cats are a Minor League Baseball team of the Pacific Coast League (PCL) and are the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. Prior to 2015, the River Cats were the Triple-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics for 15 years. They are based in West Sacramento, California, and play their home games at Sutter Health Park which opened in 2000 and was known as Raley Field through 2019. Sacramento was previously represented in the Pacific Coast League by the Solons, a charter member of the league which was founded in 1903. Three different versions of the Solons played in California's capital city in 1903, 1905, from 1909 to 1914, from 1918 to 1960, and from 1974 to 1976. Turk Leroy Schonert (January 15, 1957 – January 17, 2019) was a quarterback, quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator in the National Football League (NFL). Schonert was the head coach of the United Football League's Sacramento Mountain Lions in 2012. Playing career Early years Schonert was a two-time All-American quarterback at Servite High School in Anaheim, California. He also played in the 1968 Little League World Series as a shortstop and third baseman for the Garden Grove, California team that finished in third place.
