Sacandaga River
The Sacandaga River is a river in the northern part of New York in the United States. Its name comes from the Native American ''Sa-chen-da'-ga'', meaning "overflowed lands". The Sacandaga River is a tributary of the Hudson River, flowing into it at Hadley, at the border of Saratoga County and Warren County. River course The Sacandaga River's headwaters north of Great Sacandaga Lake begin in the town of Lake Pleasant. From Lake Pleasant, the river follows a short moving course or path known as the Sacandaga Outlet (under New York Route 8) into Lake Pleasant. The Sacandaga River drains Lake Pleasant at a location next to the public beach in the village of Speculator. The river then follows a winding path through some wetlands and various ecosystems through the county. Hudson River
The Hudson River is a river that flows from north to south primarily through eastern New York. Speculator, NY
Speculator is a village in Hamilton County, New York, United States. The population was 406 at the 2020 census. The Speculator Mountain rises just south of the village. Speculator is the only incorporated village within Hamilton County and is within the town of Lake Pleasant. The village includes the northeastern end of a lake, also called Lake Pleasant. The local inhabitants sometimes refer to the village as the "Four Corners", referring to the intersection of NYS Route 8 and NYS Route 30 in the middle of the business district. Hadley, New York
Hadley (, ) is a town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,971 at the 2000 census. The town was named after Hadley, Massachusetts. The Town of Hadley is in the northern part of the county and is west of Glens Falls. History The first settler arrived around 1788. The town was formed from parts of the Towns of Greenfield and Northumberland in 1801. The Town of Corinth was taken from Hadley in 1818, and the Town of Day was removed in 1819, bringing the Town of Hadley to its current dimensions. Conklingville Dam
The Conklingville Dam, in Hadley, Saratoga County, New York, is an earthen dam which holds back the Great Sacandaga Lake (in the town of Day, New York). The dam, completed in 1930, is owned by the Hudson River–Black River Regulating District. It stands 95 feet high, impounds a maximum of 792,000 acre-feet; the lake has a perimeter of , and an area of . The hydroelectric plant is named for Elmer West, a builder of the Spier Falls Dam located downstream on the Hudson. Northville, Fulton County, New York
Northville is a village in the northern part of the town of Northampton in Fulton County, New York, United States, northeast of Gloversville. The population was 993 at the 2020 census. It lies within Adirondack Park and serves as the southern terminus for the Northville-Placid Trail. History The site of the village was first settled around 1786, but areas south of the village were settled around 1762. The village was once on high ground between the Sacandaga River and Hunters Creek. Groff Creek
Groff Creek is a minor tributary of the Sacandaga River, and a hiking trail located in the Adirondack State Park in Hope, New York. The trail is an old logging road to camps along Devorse creek, containing three waterfalls and densely packed eastern hemlock trees and red spruce. Hiking trail The trail is located in Hope, New York, 5 and a half miles South of Wells, NY. It is a 1.8 mile trail, including 3 waterfalls each ranging between 10 and 30 feet tall. The trail was originally a major logging road that ran to Devorse creek, but the road was abandoned and later the first 2 miles of it began seeing use as a hiking trail. Part of the old road runs along a steep gorge, where loggers had to build a flying trestle to allow horses to pull logs from nearby camps. Hope is a town in Hamilton County, New York, United States. The population was 403 at the 2010 census. First settled in 1790 and established as a town in 1818, Hope is located in the southeastern corner of the county and is northwest of Schenectady. History Prior to European settlement, the land occupied by present-day Hope was within the territory of the Mohawk tribe, the easternmost tribe of the Iroquois Confederacy and one of the original "Five Nations" which founded the confederacy sometime around 1450.
