Sabanetas, Mayagüez, Puerto Rico
Sabanetas is a Barrios of Puerto Rico, barrio in the municipality of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 4,005. History Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish–American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1898 and became an Insular area, unincorporated territory of the United States. In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census of Puerto Rico finding that the population of Sabanetas barrio was 1,401. Name Sabanetas Barrio is a coastal rural and riverside barrio, which borders the municipality of Añasco to the north. It derives its name from the plains or savannas found in the northern beaches of Mayagüez, in front of the Mona Channel, and in the vicinity of the mouth of the river now called the Río Grande de Añasco. It is one of two barrios in Mayagüez whose jurisdiction extends from the main island, because its jurisdiction includes the hilly island of Desecheo, whose name is a Taíno people, Taino name ... Río Grande De Añasco
The Río Grande de Añasco is a river in western Puerto Rico. Its source is in the Cordillera Central mountain range west of Adjuntas, and it flows about westward to its mouth on the Mona Passage north of Mayagüez. The river flows through the municipalities of Mayagüez, Añasco, San Sebastián and Las Marías. The taínos called it Río Guaorabo. History In the 1898 ''Military Notes on Puerto Rico'' by the U.S. it is written that the "Añasco River is formed by the Lares Mountain ridge. Eugenio María De Hostos Airport
Eugenio María de Hostos Airport is a public use airport north of Mayagüez, a coastal city in Puerto Rico. The airport is named after Mayagüez native Eugenio Maria de Hostos. It offers limited, domestic commercial service, subsidized by the Essential Air Service program. History Eugenio María de Hostos Airport used to be the main air gateway to the western region of Puerto Rico, until Rafael Hernández Airport in Aguadilla took over that position. The airport was served during the 1960s from San Juan by Caribair, and then, rather heavily, by the Puerto Rican national air carrier, Prinair, during the 1970s and early 1980s. It took the airport three years to get commercial service again after Prinair went bankrupt in 1984. Desecheo National Wildlife Refuge
The Desecheo National Wildlife Refuge (Spanish: ''Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre de Desecheo'') is a National Wildlife Refuge in Puerto Rico. It is part of the Caribbean Islands National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The island of Desecheo is located west of Puerto Rico and is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the north and the Caribbean Sea on the south. The refuge encompasses the entire rugged island. From 1940 to 1952 the island was used as a practice target for aerial bombardment by the US War Department and from 1952 to 1960 Desecheo was used as a survival training area for the U.S. Air Force. Although formerly containing a colony of 15,000 brown boobies and 10,000 red-footed boobies, currently no successful booby breeding is known to occur on the island. 2010 Central American And Caribbean Games
The 21st Central American and Caribbean Games (Spanish: ''XXI Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe, Mayagüez 2010'') took place in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, from 18 July 2010 to 1 August 2010. Bid It was understood that Mayagüez was going to be the only city to ask to hold the games, so that there was going to be no need for a vote in the assembly held in Havana, Cuba in 2004. But the organizers found that Guatemala would present a bid of their own. The vote was held on 15 May 2005 with Mayagüez winning. El Mani Pavilion
El Mani Pavilion is a pavilion in El Mani, Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. Prior to the construction of the pavilion, the site had been occupied by a covered basketball court; this was demolished to make way for the new building. Its construction cost $3,500,000. Taíno People
The Taíno were a historic indigenous people of the Caribbean whose culture has been continued today by Taíno descendant communities and Taíno revivalist communities. At the time of European contact in the late 15th century, they were the principal inhabitants of most of what is now Cuba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Haiti, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and the northern Lesser Antilles. The Lucayan branch of the Taíno were the first New World peoples encountered by Christopher Columbus, in the Bahama Archipelago on October 12, 1492. Desecheo
Desecheo ( es, Isla Desecheo) () is a small uninhabited island of the archipelago of Puerto Rico located in the northeast of the Mona Passage; from Rincón on the west coast ( Punta Higüero) of the main island of Puerto Rico and northeast of Mona Island. It has a land area of . Politically, the island is administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as the Desecheo National Wildlife Refuge, but part of ''Barrio'' Sabanetas of Mayaguez. The municipalities of Puerto Rico (Spanish: ''municipios de Puerto Rico'') are the second-level administrative divisions in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. There are 78 such administrative divisions covering all 78 incorporated towns and cities. Each municipality is led by a mayor and divided into barrios, third-level administrative divisions, though the latter are not vested with any political authority.
