Saaremaa Municipality
Saaremaa Municipality, also known as Saaremaa Rural Municipality ( et, Saaremaa vald), is a municipality in Saare County in western Estonia. It is the largest municipality in Estonia by land area. The administrative centre of the municipality is its only town Kuressaare. It is one of three parishes comprising the county, along with Muhu and Ruhnu Parish. It was formed following the 2017 Estonian municipal reform on 21 October 2017 on the basis of all twelve former Saaremaa municipalities: Kuressaare town and Kihelkonna, Laimjala, Leisi, Lääne-Saare, Mustjala, Orissaare, Pihtla, Pöide, Salme, Torgu and Valjala Valjala is a small borough (') in Saare County, Estonia, on the island of Saaremaa. Municipalities Of Estonia
A municipality ( et, omavalitsus, plural ) is the smallest administrative subdivision of Estonia. Each municipality is a unit of self-government with its representative and executive bodies. The municipalities in Estonia cover the entire territory of the country. Laimjala Parish
Laimjala Parish (also called the Laimjala rural municipality or Laimjala parish) was in Saare County, Estonia. This parish did consist of 24 villages. The municipality had a population of 793 people (as of 1 January 2006) and covers an area of 116 km². During the administrative-territorial reform in 2017, all 12 municipalities on the island Saaremaa were merged into a single municipality – Saaremaa Parish. Torgu Parish
Torgu Parish was a rural municipality at the tip of the Sõrve Peninsula on the island of Saaremaa in western Estonia. It is a part of Saare County. This parish consisted of 22 villages. The municipality had a population of 375 (as of 1 January 2006) and covered an area of 126.44 km². During the administrative-territorial reform in 2017, all 12 municipalities on the island Saaremaa were merged into a single municipality – Saaremaa Parish. Kingdom of Torgu In 1992, following independence from the Soviet Union, an error in the new constitution of Estonia led to Torgu being left out. In response, the area's 500 inhabitants decided to form their own kingdom. Journalist and activist Kirill Teiter became its first monarch. The following year, the error was corrected and Torgu officially became part of Estonia. Nevertheless, the kingdom's flag and coat of arms can still be seen in the parish. Salme Parish
Salme Parish was a municipality in Saare County, Estonia. It contained the northern half of the Sõrve Peninsula of the island of Saaremaa. Besides the small borough Salme there were 24 villages: Anseküla, Easte, Hindu, Imara, Järve, Kaimri, Kaugatoma, Läätsa, Lahetaguse, Länga, Lassi, Lõmala, Lõu, Metsalõuka, Mõisaküla, Möldri, Rahuste, Suurna, Tehumardi, Tiirimetsa, Toomalõuka, Ula, Üüdibe, Vintri. Prior to 1936, the municipality was called Abruka. During the Second World War, the Battle of Tehumardi took place in Salme. The location is marked by a 21-metre Soviet monument. Pöide Parish was a municipality in Saare County, Estonia. The municipality covered an area of 123.6 km² (47.7 mi²) and had a population of 953 (as of 1 January 2006). Lääne-Saare Parish ( et, Lääne-Saare vald) was a rural municipality of Estonia, in Saare County. It was located on the western part of Saaremaa island. Kuressaare
Kuressaare () is a town on Saaremaa island in Estonia. It is the administrative centre of Saaremaa Parish and the capital of Saare County. Kuressaare is the westernmost town in Estonia. The recorded population on 1 January 2018 was 13,276. The town is situated on the southern coast of Saaremaa island, facing the Gulf of Riga of the Baltic Sea, and is served by the Kuressaare Airport, Roomassaare harbour, and Kuressaare yacht harbour. Names Kuressaare's historic name Arensburg (from Middle High German ''a(a)r:'' eagle, raptor) renders the Latin denotation ''arx aquilae'' for the city's castle. The fortress and the eagle, tetramorph symbol of Saint John the Evangelist, are also depicted on Kuressaare's coat of arms.
