Sportverein Spittal/Drau is an Austrian association football club, based in Spittal an der Drau, Carinthia. The club founded in 1921 was promoted to the First League (II) in 1982 and won the championship of the 1983–84 season, however playing in the Bundesliga only until its immediate relegation in 1985. Spittal then became a long-term member of the First League until in 1999 the team slipped to the Austrian Regional League Central. Kärntner Liga
The Kärntner Liga is the fourth highest division in Austrian football for clubs in the area of the province of Carinthia and the East Tyrol region, that belong to the Carinthian Football Association (german: Kärntner Fussballverband, KFV). Below the Kärntner Liga are the ''Unterliga West'' and ''Unterliga Ost''. Mode The Carinthian League is organized as a league system competition in which, since 2003/04, in principle 16 teams participate (previously there were usually 14 teams, in 2002/03 15). The game is played in 30 championship rounds, each divided into a home and away round. The games and venues are drawn at the beginning of the season. Football is the most popular sport in Austria. The Austrian Football Association, the ''ÖFB'' (''Österreichischer Fußball-Bund''), was founded in 1904 and has been a member of FIFA since then. Despite the sport's popularity, except for a successful streak in the early 1930s, the country's national team has not been successful in tournaments. Austria played their first ever European championship as a qualifier in 2016, but finished last in their group and failed to advance. Their only prior appearance in the European championship was in 2008 (when it co-hosted the championship with Switzerland and was thus exempt from qualification), but was promptly eliminated already at the group stage. Spittal An Der Drau
Spittal an der Drau is a town in the western part of the Austrian federal state of Carinthia. It is the administrative centre of Spittal an der Drau District, Austria's second largest district (''Bezirk'') by area. Geography The town is located on the southern slopes of the Gurktal Alps (Nock Mountains), between the Lurnfeld Basin and the Lower Drau Valley. Despite its name, the historic core of Spittal originated on the banks of the small Lieser tributary, which flows into the Drau at the foot of Mt. Goldeck, a peak of the Gailtal Alps south of the town. Its summit can be reached by cable car. The municipal area consists of seven Katastralgemeinden: Amlach, Edling, Großegg, Molzbichl, Olsach, Spittal proper, and St. Peter-Edling. Carinthia (german: Kärnten ; sl, Koroška ) is the southernmost Austrian state, in the Eastern Alps, and is noted for its mountains and lakes. The main language is German. The Austrian Football Second League (german: 2. Liga) is the second-highest professional division in Austrian football. It was formerly called the First League (''Erste Liga''), from 2002 to 2018.
