SS La Grange
USS ''La Grange'' (APA-124) was a in service with the United States Navy from 1944 to 1945. She was scrapped in 1975. History ''La Grange'' was of the VC2-S-AP5 Victory ship design type and was named for LaGrange County, Indiana. ''La Grange'' was laid down under a Maritime Commission contract 26 June 1944 by the California Shipbuilding Corp., Wilmington, California; launched 1 September 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Albert Krutcher; acquired by the Navy 10 November 1944; and commissioned 11 November 1944. World War II After shakedown and amphibious training operations, ''La Grange'' departed San Diego 1 January 1945 for the Pacific Ocean theater of World War II, western Pacific. Arriving Manus Island, Manus 18 January the attack transport carried cargo and passengers to Jayapura, Hollandia and the Philippines before joining Transport Squadron 17. LaGrange County, Indiana
LaGrange County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of 2020, the population was 40,446. The county seat is LaGrange, Indiana. The county is located in the Northern Indiana region known as Michiana and is about east of South Bend, west of Toledo, Ohio, and northeast of Indianapolis. The area is well known for its large Amish population. For that reason, the county teams up with neighboring Elkhart County to promote tourism by referring to the area as Northern Indiana Amish Country. About half of LaGrange County is Amish, and it is home to the third-largest Amish community in the United States, which belongs to the Elkhart-LaGrange Amish affiliation. History The first settlement of LaGrange County was founded about a half mile west of Lima in 1828. Over the next four years, settlers flocked to parts of Lima, Springfield, and Van Buren Townships.
