Beaton, British Columbia
Beaton is at the head of the Beaton Arm of Upper Arrow Lake in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The locality is sometimes confused with nearby Evansport. In 1896, the steamboat landing became the eastern terminal for the Arrowhead–Beaton ferry. Formerly Thomson's Landing, it was named after the land owner, James William Thomson, who was the local notary public in 1901. Thomson's subsequent partner was Malcolm Beaton, sometimes confused with Donald J. Beaton, publisher of the ''Nelson Miner'' in Nelson. In 1902, the name changed to Beaton, because of destination confusions for mail and freight arising from the prior name. There were 65 residents in 1911. Burton is a settlement on the east shore of Lower Arrow Lake in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. Before European contact, Burton was known as Xaieken, a large village of Sinixt first nations people. Inadequate archeological research of the area exists to support several First Nations claims. Burton arose in the 1890s when gold was found at Cariboo Creek, a steamboat stop. The community was named for Reuben Burton who preempted in 1893 and was the postmaster. Robson is an unincorporated community in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The former steamboat landing and railway terminal is on the northeast side of the Columbia River. ''Lytton'' was a sternwheel steamboat that ran on the Arrow Lakes and the Columbia River in southeastern British Columbia and northeastern Washington from 1890 to 1904. The Columbia and Western Railway (C&W) was a historic, and initially narrow gauge, railway in southern British Columbia. Heinze ownership Proposal & planning Fritz Augustus Heinze, who opened a smelter at Butte, Montana in 1893, was seeking investment opportunities. Attracted by the emerging mining boom on Red Mountain, Rossland, Heinze incorporated the British Columbia Smelting and Refining Company with a commitment to lay trackage between the mines and the Trail smelter. From the smelter, which opened in February 1896, boats could carry the metal concentrate to complete the purification at a refinery. Arrow Lakes
The Arrow Lakes in British Columbia, Canada, divided into Upper Arrow Lake and Lower Arrow Lake, are widenings of the Columbia River.
