SS ''Cathay'' was the name of a number of ships, including: * served with P & O until sold in 1890. * SS ''Cathay'', launched in 1924, served with P&O until bombed and sunk in 1942. * SS ''Cathay'', launched in 1942 as ''Empire Archer'', renamed ''Cathay'' in 1959 and operated by the Cathay Shipping Corporation, Panama and scrapped in 1963. *, completed for Compagnie Maritime Belge in 1957 as ''Baudouinville'', withdrawn 1960, renamed ''Cathay'' in 1961 and operated by P&O. P&O (in full, The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company) is a British shipping and logistics company dating from the early 19th century. SS Cathay (1924)
SS ''Cathay'' was a P&O passenger steamship that was built in Scotland in 1925 and sunk in the Mediterranean Sea in 1942. In the Second World War she was first an armed merchant cruiser and then a troop ship. In 1942 she took part in Operation Torch, and was sunk in a German air raid off Bougie, Algeria. ''Cathay'' was the first of a class of three ocean liners for P&O, all built at the same time. Her sister ships were ''Comorin'' and ''Chitral''. This was the second of three P&O liners called ''Cathay''. The first was a compound steamship that was built in Scotland in 1872 and scrapped in Japan in 1903. The third was a steam turbine ship that P&O owned between 1961 and 1976. She was built in Belgium in 1957 as ''Baudouinville''. ''Empire Archer'' was a 7,031 ton cargo ship which was built in 1942. She was renamed ''Baron Murray'' in 1946. In 1959 she was renamed ''Cathay'', serving until 1963 when she was scrapped. History Wartime ''Empire Archer'' was built by Caledon Shipbuilding & Engineering Company, Dundee as yard number 395. She was launched on 29 June 1942 and completed in August 1942. ''Empire Archer'' was built for the Ministry of War Transport and managed by Raeburn & Verel Ltd. ''Empire Archer'' served in a number of convoys during the Second World War. ;JW51B Convoy JW 51B sailed from Liverpool on 22 December 1942 and arrived at the Kola Inlet on 4 January 1943. ''Empire Archer'' was carrying the convoy's Commodore, Captain R A Melhuish. Her cargo consisted of 21 fighter aircraft, 4,376 tons of general cargo, 18 tanks and 141 vehicles. The Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB) is one of the oldest Antwerp ship-owners. It is controlled by the Saverys family who also own major stakes in the Exmar and Euronav groups. History CMB was founded in 1895 under the name Compagnie Belge Maritime du Congo (CBMC). At the request of Leopold II of Belgium and with support from British investors, a maritime connection was opened with Congo Free State. On 6 February 1895 the CMBC ship ''Léopoldville'' was the first to leave port of Antwerp for Congo Free State. For sixty years the Congo boats (''Kongoboten'') were a constant presence in the port of Antwerp. In 1930 CBMC acquired ', another Belgian shipowner. The name of the new company became Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB), and new lines were opened towards America and the Far East.
