State Route 233 (SR 233) is a state highway in rural eastern Elko County, Nevada, United States. The highway follows the route of the First transcontinental railroad from Interstate 80 (I-80) to the Utah state line. The highway was formerly numbered State Route 30. Route description I-80 follows the route of the First Transcontinental Railroad throughout most of Nevada, but departs this corridor east of Wells. The historical route went around the north end of the Pequop Mountains, towards the north shore of the Great Salt Lake. Modern I-80 directly crosses these mountains en route to the south shore of the lake. State Route 233 exits I-80 at Exit 378 in Oasis, on the other side of the Pequops from Wells. Route 233 proceeds on a northeast course to rejoin the route of the railroad. A diamond interchange is a common type of road junction, used where a controlled-access highway crosses a minor road. Design The freeway itself is grade-separated from the minor road, one crossing the other over a bridge. Approaching the interchange from either direction, an off-ramp diverges only slightly from the freeway and runs directly across the minor road, becoming an on-ramp that returns to the freeway in similar fashion. Nevada's original State Routes were developed beginning in 1917 upon the creation of the Nevada Department of Highways. Route numbers were not assigned according to any particular numbering system, and sequential numbers were often scattered throughout the state. For example, while State Routes 27 and 28 were designated along highways near Lake Tahoe in northwestern Nevada, State Route 29 connected to Death Valley in central Nevada and State Route 30 was connected to Utah in northeastern Nevada. Interstate 84 (I-84) is a part of the Interstate Highway System that links Portland, Oregon, to I-80 near Echo, Utah. The segment in the US state of Utah is the shortest of any of the three states the western I-84 passes through and contains the eastern terminus of the highway. I-84 enters Box Elder County near Snowville before becoming concurrent with I-15 in Tremonton. State Route 30 (SR-30) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Utah. It is the only highway signed as a Utah state route (with the beehive shaped route marker) to traverse the entire width of the state. Legislatively the highway exists as 3 separate segments. With implied connections via Interstate 84 and U.S. Route 89, the highway is drivable as a continuous route from Nevada to Wyoming. The western segment is a historic corridor paralleling the pre-Lucin Cutoff routing of the First transcontinental railroad.
