SMU Press
Southern Methodist University Press (or SMU Press) was a university press that is part of Southern Methodist University. It was established in 1937 and was the oldest academic publisher in Texas. The press released eight to ten titles each year and was known for its literary fiction. It was scheduled to suspend operations on June 1, 2010. The provost of SMU announced in 2011 plans to reorganize the press with a smaller budget and different goals. It closed again in 2015. History The first book published by the press was Samuel Wood Greiser's ''Naturalists of the Frontier'' (1937). However, the unofficial start of the SMU Press was in 1924, when the ''Southwest Review'' was moved from Austin to Dallas. John H. McGinnis served as the unpaid, unofficial editor-in-chief of the ''Southwest Review'' from 1927 to 1943 and played an essential role in founding the press. University Park is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States of America, in suburban Dallas. The population was 23,068 at the 2010 census. The city is home to Southern Methodist University. University Park is bordered on the north, east and west by Dallas and on the south by the town of Highland Park. University Park and Highland Park together comprise the Park Cities, an enclave of Dallas. University Park is one of the most affluent places in Texas based on per capita income; it is ranked #12. University Press
A university press is an academic publishing house specializing in monographs and scholarly journals. Most are nonprofit organizations and an integral component of a large research university. They publish work that has been reviewed by scholars in the field. They produce mainly academic works but also often have trade books for a lay audience. These trade books also get peer reviewed. Because scholarly books are mostly unprofitable, university presses may also publish textbooks and reference works, which tend to have larger audiences and sell more copies. Most university presses operate at a loss and are subsidized by their owners; others are required to break even. The ''Southwest Review'' is a literary journal published quarterly, based on the Southern Methodist University campus in Dallas, Texas. It is the third oldest literary quarterly in the United States. The current editor-in-chief is Greg Brownderville. The journal was formerly known as the ''Texas Review'', and was started in 1915 at the University of Texas. In 1924 the magazine was transferred to SMU by Jay B.
