SLAPP Suits (Last Week Tonight)
"SLAPP Suits" is a segment of HBO's news satire, news-satire television series ''Last Week Tonight with John Oliver'', focusing on strategic lawsuit against public participation, strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP). It first aired on November 10, 2019, as part of the twenty-ninth episode of the series's sixth season. The episode marked British-American comedian and host John Oliver's response to winning a SLAPP defamation lawsuit against him initiated by American mining businessman Robert E. Murray. The lawsuit began in 2017, after Oliver heavily criticized Murray and his company, American Consolidated Natural Resources, Murray Energy, in a segment concerning the Coal mining in the United States, coal-mining industry in the United States. ''Last Week Tonight with John Oliver'' (often abridged as ''Last Week Tonight'') is an American late-night talk show, late-night talk and news satire television program hosted by comedian John Oliver. The half-hour-long show premiered in April 2014 on HBO. ''Last Week Tonight'' shares some similarities with Comedy Central's ''The Daily Show'' (where Oliver was previously List of The Daily Show correspondents, featured as a correspondent and fill-in host), as the show takes a satirical look at news, politics and current events, but on a weekly basis and primarily from a Modern liberalism in the United States, liberal bent.
