State Highway 28 (abbreviated SH-28) is a state highway in Oklahoma. It runs in an irregular west-to-east pattern through Nowata, Rogers, Mayes and Delaware counties. There is one letter-suffixed spur highway branching from SH-28, SH-28A. Route description SH-28 begins at US-169 just south of Delaware. From there it travels east-to-south, passing the community of Childers, to a junction with US-60. Crossing US-60, SH-28 runs six miles (10 km) due south to New Alluwe, then eight miles (13 km) south and east to Chelsea, where it intersects SH-66. From Chelsea, it is six miles (10 km) straight south to the junction with SH-28A, where SH-28 turns due east, intersects with I-44 after four miles (6 km), and five miles (8 km) farther crosses US-69 at Adair. Pensacola is a town in Mayes County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 125 at the 2010 census, which represented a 76 percent increase from the figure of 71 recorded in 2000. History The history of Pensacola began ''circa'' 1840, with the establishment of a way station on the old Texas Road at the Cabin Creek Crossing of the Grand River. Here, Joseph Lynch Martin (a.k.a. State Highway 20 (abbreviated SH-20) is a highway in northeastern Oklahoma. Its eastern terminus is at the corner of Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri near Southwest City, Missouri; its western terminus is at State Highway 18 near Ralston. The highway runs a total length of . It has no lettered spur routes. Route description SH-20 begins just north of the Arkansas River at SH-18 near Ralston. From there, it heads east through Osage County for 20 miles (32 km) without crossing any other highway. At mile 20.4, it meets State Highway 99 in Hominy. Disney is a town in Mayes County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 311 at the 2010 census. The town is named for former Oklahoma U.S. Congressman Wesley E. Disney and has no affiliation with The Walt Disney Company or Walt Disney. Overview Disney is also known as "Disney Island" because it sits on an island at the southern shore of Grand Lake o' the Cherokees. Oklahoma State Highway 28 is the only road into and out of Disney. To get into Disney from the west, one must drive across the 1-mile long Pensacola Dam. To continue out of Disney, two more small dams with spillway gates must be crossed. Pensacola Dam
The Pensacola Dam, also known as the Grand River Dam, is a multiple-arch buttress dam on the Grand River in-between Disney and Langley in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The dam is operated by the Grand River Dam Authority and creates Grand Lake o' the Cherokees. After decades of vision and planning, it was constructed between 1938 and 1940 for the purposes of hydroelectric power generation, flood control and recreation. It is Oklahoma's first hydroelectric power plant and is referred to as the longest multiple-arch dam in the world. Background The idea to construct a dam on the Grand River originated in the late 1800s with Henry C. Holderman, a Cherokee Nation citizen, who wanted to provide electric power to the Cherokee Nation. Holderman and a few colleagues soon conducted the first survey of the river in 1895 on their own handmade houseboat. Langley, Oklahoma
Langley is a town in Mayes County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 819 at the 2010 census. History Langley, still located at its original site, is on State Highway 82 at the west end of the Pensacola Dam, which is on the National Register of Historic Places listings in Mayes County, Oklahoma. The dam holds back the Grand Lake o' the Cherokees (aka Grand Lake). Dam construction started in 1935. Cliff Bogle, the original owner in the area, divided his land into lots, and in 1937 the Town was established with a public dedication and drawing for free lots. The Town was named for Oklahoma State Senator J. Howard Langley. Langley incorporated on November 20, 1939, and a post office was established on January 20, 1939. The Dam was completed in 1941, and the town began to promote itself to the recreation industry. The Dam itself is on the National Register of Historic Places listings in Mayes County, Oklahoma.
