SGB Championship 2024
The 2024 SGB Championship season will be the 77th season of the second tier of Speedway in the United Kingdom, British Speedway and the 7th known as the SGB Championship. The league was sponsored by Cab Direct. Summary Nine clubs will compete in the Championship during 2024, with Workington Comets replacing Birmingham Brummies following their respective league changes. Edinburgh Monarchs once again remained in the league despite problems surrounding their home venue. The league format will be the same as in 2023, with each team racing against each other twice (home and away), meaning a total of 16 fixtures each during the season. The top four teams qualify for the playoffs. The points limit for team construction was reduced from 40 to 38 points. The Speedway Great Britain (SGB) Championship is the second division of speedway league competition in the United Kingdom, governed by the Speedway Control Bureau (SCB), in conjunction with the British Speedway Promoters' Association (BSPA). Poole Pirates
Poole Pirates (also known as Poole Speedway) are a motorcycle speedway team based in Poole, England, competing in the SGB Championship. The club have been the champions of the United Kingdom on ten occasions. Poole Speedway is promoted by local businessman Matt Ford and son Danny Ford, who took over promoting rights of the club in 1998. The team is managed by past rider and former Great Britain team manager Neil Middleditch. Wimborne Road Stadium has been home to the club since it was founded in 1948. In August 2004, Poole hosted the Speedway World Cup final, which was won by Sweden. Stadium Poole Stadium (also known as Wimborne Road Stadium), has been the Pirates' home track since the club was created in 1948. It is situated near to the town centre and is owned by Poole Borough Council. The stadium's capacity was limited to 5,500 people in 2008 for safety reasons. Drew Kemp
Drew Kemp (born 11 August 2002) is a British motorcycle speedway rider. Career In 2019, riding for Kent Kings Kemp won the Division 3 Pairs with Anders Rowe, the National Trophy and finished runner-up in the NDL Riders' Championship behind his teammate Rowe. He reached the final of the 2019 U19 European Championship. Kemp joined Eastbourne Eagles on 19 November 2019, for their 2020 SGB Championship season. It was confirmed, on 18 February 2020, that he would ride for his hometown club Ipswich Witches in the SGB Premiership. He was brought into the side after the suicide of his former Mildenhall Fen Tigers teammate Danny Ayres. However the season was curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Kemp rode for the Ipswich Witches for the SGB Premiership 2021 and the Eastbourne Eagles for the SGB Championship 2021. Danyon Hume
Danyon Hume (born 25 July 1996) is a speedway rider from England. Career He began his British speedway career riding for the Rye House Raiders during the 2015 National League speedway season. The following year in 2016, he signed for Ipswich Witches at the back end of the season In 2017, he sustained a major arm injury at Poole which sidelined him for the remainder of that season. In 2019 as the club captain, he helped Leicester Lion Cubs win the division 3 league and cup double during the 2019 National Development League speedway season. In 2021, he rode for the Sheffield Tigers in the SGB Premiership, in addition to riding for the Poole Pirates in the SGB Championship. In 2022, he rode for the Ipswich Witches in the SGB Premiership as the number 8 rider and joined Glasgow Tigers in the SGB Championship. The SGB Championship Riders' Individual Championship is an annual motorcycle speedway contest between the top riders (or two riders) with the highest average points total from each club competing in the SGB Championship. Oxford Stadium
Oxford Stadium is a greyhound racing and speedway venue in Oxford, located in Sandy Lane, Cowley. Races were historically held every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evening with afternoon BAGS (Bookmakers Afternoon Greyhound Service) racing on Friday and Sunday. Race evenings also included Friday evenings at various times throughout the history of the stadium. SGB Championship Pairs Championship
The SGB Championship Pairs Championship formerly the Premier League Pairs Championship (from 1997 to 2016) is a motorcycle speedway contest for the second tier teams in the SGB Championship in the United Kingdom. The teams consist of the top two riders from each club competing. The meetings comprise ten teams of two riders drawn into two qualifying groups. Rules Gate positions In the ''Qualification Heats'', riders are allocated starting gates. For the ''Semi-Finals'', the group winners have first choice of gate positions (A&C or B&D). Gate A is on the inside of the track, whilst Gate D is on the outside. For the ''Final'', the gate positions (A&C and B&D) are decided by the toss of a coin. Knockout Cup (sometimes referred to as the KO Cup) is a type of British motorcycle speedway competition, examples of which have run annually since 1929. Each tier of British Speedway has its own respective Knockout Cup. The current Knockout Cup competitions are the SGB Premiership Knockout Cup (tier one), the SGB Championship Knockout Cup (tier two) and the National League Knockout Cup (tier three).
