SFContario
SFContario is a general-interest science fiction convention held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and sponsored by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Society of Upper Canada. The first convention took place on November 19–21, 2010, at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Toronto. The guests of honour were author Michael Swanwick, writers and editors Patrick and Teresa Nielsen Hayden, fan Geri Sullivan, filk musician Karen Linsley, artist Billy Tackett, and toastmaster Robert J. Sawyer. The convention chair was Alexander von Thorn. Canvention is the Canada, Canadian national science fiction convention, where the Prix Aurora Awards are presented. Normally it is held as part of an existing convention. Chandler Davis
Horace Chandler Davis (August 12, 1926 – September 24, 2022) was an American-Canadian mathematician, writer, educator, and political activist: "an internationally esteemed mathematician, a minor science fiction writer of note, and among the most celebrated political prisoners in the United States during the years of the high Cold War.". Background Horace Chandler Davis, known as "Chan" by friends, was born on August 12, 1926 in Ithaca, New York, to parents Horace Bancroft Davis and Marian Rubins, both members of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA). John Scalzi
John Michael Scalzi II (born May 10, 1969) is an American science fiction author and former president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. He is best known for his ''Old Man's War'' series, three novels of which have been nominated for the Hugo Award, and for his blog ''Whatever'', where he has written on a number of topics since 1998. Science is a systematic endeavor that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe. ''File 770'' is a long-running science fiction fanzine, newszine, and blog site published/administered by Mike Glyer. It has been published every year since 1978, and has won a record eight Hugo Awards for Best Fanzine, with the first win in 1984 and the most recent in 2018. History File 770 is named after the legendary room party held in Room 770 at Nolacon, the 9th World Science Fiction Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, that upstaged the other events at the 1951 Worldcon. Glyer started ''File 770'' in 1978 as a mimeographed print fanzine to report on fan clubs, conventions, fannish projects, fans, fanzines and SF awards, with articles written in a "no-nonsense style". In the 1990s, Glyer moved production of the fanzine to computer desktop publishing, and on January 15, 2008, he began publishing ''File 770'' as a blog on the internet. Dave Kyle
David A. Kyle (February 14, 1919 – September 18, 2016) was an American science fiction writer and member of science fiction fandom. Professional career Kyle served as a reporter in the Air Force Reserves with the rank of lieutenant colonel, writing civil defense material, while working at radio station WPDM in Potsdam, New York. With Martin Greenberg, Kyle founded Gnome Press in 1948. He wrote two pictorial histories of science fiction (''A Pictorial History of Science Fiction'' and ''The Illustrated Book of Science Fiction Ideas and Dreams'') and three licensed novels set in the Lensman universe (''The Dragon Lensman'', ''Lensman from Rigel'' and ''Z-Lensman''). He appeared with Paul Levinson, Greg Bear and many others on the History Channel's 2002 documentary, ''Fantastic Voyage: Evolution of Science Fiction''. Seanan McGuire
Seanan McGuire (pronounced SHAWN-in; born January 5, 1978 in Martinez, California) is an American author and filker. McGuire is known for her urban fantasy novels. She uses the pseudonym Mira Grant to write science fiction/ horror and the pseudonym A. Deborah Baker to write the "Up-and-Under" children's portal fantasy series. In 2010, she was awarded the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer by the World Science Fiction Convention.
