North Sioux City is a city in Union County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 3,042 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Sioux City, IA- NE-SD Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The southern tip of this land between the Missouri River from the west and south and the Big Sioux River from the north and east was a meeting place for Native American Indians traveling the two rivers. Area tribes current to the 1804 Lewis and Clark expedition were the Omaha, Yankton Dakota and Ponca, all Siouan language speakers. French-Canadian farmer Joseph La Plant, born ca. 1823 in Indiana, settled at Sioux Point in 1849 and is listed with other early settlers in the 1860 census as living "Between Big Sioux and Big Stone Lake" in the "Unorganized" area of Minnesota, with the closest post office located immediately down and across the rivers in Sioux City, Iowa. Jefferson, South Dakota
Jefferson is a city in Union County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 475 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Sioux City, IA- NE-SD Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jefferson was founded in 1859. Every year the citizens of Jefferson and surrounding area celebrate the founding of Jefferson during the "Days of '59", a festival that includes softball, basketball, horseshoes, car show, fireworks and parade. The city has the name of President Thomas Jefferson. History Jefferson was primarily settled by French-Canadians. By 1867 the town consisted of 25 or so French-Canadian families. During the winter of 1880–1, the town was ravaged by a smallpox epidemic, reported to have arrived in the area via Russian Mennonite emigrants en route to Yankton, in the Dakota Territory. The town was quarantined for several weeks, without railroad service or mail delivery. Interstate 29 (I-29) is a north–south Interstate Highway in the midwestern United States. In the state of South Dakota, I-29 traverses on the eastern side of the state from the Iowa border near Sioux City to the North Dakota border near New Effington. On its route, I-29 passes through western portions of Sioux Falls, the state's largest city. It travels in the state, the longest stretch of any of the four states through which it passes. Sioux City () is a city in Woodbury and Plymouth counties in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Iowa. The population was 85,797 in the 2020 census, making it the fourth-largest city in Iowa. These roads are now either parts of other routes or no longer carry a route number. __TOC__ Highway 8 South Dakota Highway 8 was one of only two single digit state highway numbers known to be used in South Dakota. It was a state route across north central and northwest South Dakota, generally following what is now South Dakota Highway 20. The first designation of this route, in 1926, was South Dakota Highway 18. By the late 1920s, U.S. Highway 18 was established across southern South Dakota. The existence of two highway 18's was corrected around 1935, when the northern highway was redesignated as South Dakota 8.
