South Carolina Highway 23 (SC 23) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It serves to connect Edgefield and Batesburg-Leesville with Columbia via U.S. Route 1 (US 1). Route description SC 23 is a two-lane rural highway that travels from Modoc, within the Sumter National Forest and near Lake Strom Thurmond, to Batesburg-Leesville. The highway travels through mostly either forest or farmland, while connecting with the city and towns of Edgefield, Johnston, Ward, Ridge Spring and Monetta. Between Monetta and Batesburg-Leesville, SC 23 parallels to the north of US 1. The highway travels in a C-shape from a point approximately southeast of Varnville northwest and north to Barnwell, and then northeast to Swansea. South Carolina Highway 430 (SC 430) is an state highway in the west central part of the U.S. state of South Carolina. The highway travels in a south-north orientation from just northeast of Edgefield northwest and then due north to a point on the edge of Sumter National Forest, all within Edgefield County. Route description SC 430 begins at an intersection with SC 23 just northeast of Edgefield. This is also the northern terminus of SC 23 Truck, which begins concurrent with SC 430. Concurrency (road)
A concurrency in a road network is an instance of one physical roadway bearing two or more different route numbers. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons. Other terminology for a concurrency includes overlap, coincidence, duplex (two concurrent routes), triplex (three concurrent routes), multiplex (any number of concurrent routes), dual routing or triple routing. Concurrent numbering can become very common in jurisdictions that allow it. Where multiple routes must pass between a single mountain crossing or over a bridge, or through a major city, it is often economically and practically advantageous for them all to be accommodated on a single physical roadway. The entire route parallels I-95. From the southern border to Hope Mills, it runs very close to I-95, crossing it several times and having a short concurrency with the freeway in Lumberton.
