SA Centrair
Centrair was a French glider manufacturer that was founded by Marc Ranjon and his wife Genevieve in 1970.Taylor, J.W.R. 1987, p.731 It started as the agent for glider manufacturer Alexander Schleicher GmbH & Co, but it manufactured Schleicher's ASW 20 under licence from 1977. Later, Centrair also manufactured the Scheibe SF 34 as the Centrair SNC-34 Alliance. Ranjon decided to build a new Standard Class sailplane with a wing thinner than the ASW 19 using the ASW 20 fuselage. The result was the C101 Pegase which first flew in 1981. Schleichers were not happy that their agent was in competition with them using their fuselage design, but the dispute was settled. Three hundred Pegases were made before production stopped in 1988. They were never competitive with the best in the Standard Class, but are popular "club" aircraft, being easy to handle. Glider (sailplane)
A glider or sailplane is a type of glider aircraft used in the leisure activity and sport of gliding (also called soaring). This unpowered aircraft can use naturally occurring currents of rising air in the atmosphere to gain altitude. Sailplanes are aerodynamically streamlined and so can fly a significant distance forward for a small decrease in altitude. In North America the term 'sailplane' is also used to describe this type of aircraft. In other parts of the English-speaking world, the word 'glider' is more common. Alexander Schleicher GmbH & Co is a major manufacturer of sailplanes located in Poppenhausen, near Fulda in Germany. It is also the oldest sailplane manufacturer in the world. Alexander Schleicher ASW 20
The ASW 20 is an FAI 15 metre Class glider designed by Gerhard Waibel and built by Alexander Schleicher GmbH & Co. Its fuselage is nearly identical to that of the ASW 19, mated to newly designed flapped wings for the 15 metre Class. The prototype first flew in 1977. It proved to be a highly successful glider, winning several World Championships, and was still being flown at this level up to 1995. Developments along its production life included winglets, pneumatic turbulators, and wingtip extensions. It remained in production until 1990, when it was superseded by the ASW 27. 765 were built by Schleicher and a further 140 were made under license by Centrair in France. Glider Competition Classes
Competition classes in gliding, as in other sports, mainly exist to ensure fairness in competition. However the classes have not been targeted at fostering technological development as in other sports. Instead classes have arisen because of: * the popularity of certain types of glider * attempts to contain the cost of access to the sport * the need to establish a stable environment for investment decisions by both manufacturers and competitors. The FAI Gliding Commission (IGC) is the sporting body overseeing air sports at the international level so that essentially the same classes and class definitions are followed in all countries. Alexander Schleicher ASW 19
The ASW 19 is a single-seat glider (sailplane), glider built by Alexander Schleicher GmbH & Co, first flying in 1975. It was originally designed as a FAI Standard Class, Standard Class glider, but now mainly competes in the Club class, Club Class. The ASW 19 is known for its pleasant handling and some clubs use it as a training glider. It was succeeded by the all-new Schleicher ASW 24. Centrair C101 Pegase
The Centrair C101 Pegase is a Standard Class single-seat glider manufactured by Centrair starting in 1981. The design uses the ASW 19 fuselage with a new wing designed by ONERA, giving better performance than the German original. Models manufactured since 1990 as the Pegase 90 are equipped with a different cockpit interior: Shorter handles, smaller instrument panel and minor structural changes. The major difference between the Pegase 90 and previous models was the introduction of flight controls that automatically connect during rigging. Centrair C201 Marianne
The Centrair 201 Marianne is a training glider seating two in tandem, designed and built in France in the 1980s. It was intended to replace the numerous but ageing gliders equipping French gliding clubs; when Centrair ceased trading in 1988 some eighty Mariannes had been sold, fewer than hoped. Design and development French government support for gliding was generous immediately after World War II but was fading by the 1980s. The Fédération Français de Vol à Voile (FFVV), who administered the French gliding movement, had to become self-financing and were central players in an effort to retain a viable gliding manufacturing base in France.
