S12 (St. Gallen S-Bahn)
The S12 is a railway service of the St. Gallen S-Bahn that provides half-hourly service between and over the southern end of the Chur–Rorschach line. THURBO, a joint venture of Swiss Federal Railways and the canton of Thurgau, operates the service. Operations The S12 operates every 30 minutes between and , using the southern end of the Chur–Rorschach line. In Sargans, an hourly connection is made with the S4, which operates in a circular fashion west over the Ziegelbrücke–Sargans line and north up the Chur–Rorschach line. The S12 is supplemented by various long-distance trains. The Chur–Rorschach railway line, also called the Rhine Valley line (german: Rheintallinie), is a standard gauge railway line in Switzerland. It belongs to the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and is located in the cantons of Canton of St. Gallen, St. Gallen and Canton of Grisons, the Grisons. History 19th century The construction of the Rhine valley line was started by the United Swiss Railways, Southeastern Railway (''Schweizerische Südostbahn''), which sought to build a railway through the Lukmanier Pass. The first work, which was carried out by English contractors, was unsatisfactory. Due to a lack of financial resources, the Southeastern Railway was taken over during the construction by the United Swiss Railways (''Vereinigte Schweizerbahnen'', VSB), which continued the work without interruption. The S-Bahn is the name of hybrid urban- suburban rail systems serving a metropolitan region in German-speaking countries.
