S. George Ellsworth
Samuel George Ellsworth (1916–1997) was an American historian specializing in Western United States history and the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a founding editor of the ''Western Political Quarterly''. Biography Early life and education Ellsworth was born in Safford, Arizona but was raised in California, Utah and Missouri as well as Arizona. He graduated from Kansas City High School and began his college studies at Kansas City Junior College. He then served a mission for the LDS Church in the North Central States Mission, headquartered in Minneapolis. After his mission Ellsworth went to Logan, Utah where he studied at what is now Utah State University earning a bachelor's degree in history and math. He was appointed principal of the LDS Seminary in Bunkerville, Nevada as well as working as a teacher at Virgin Valley High School. Logandale, Nevada
Logandale is located in Clark County, Nevada. It was an unincorporated town in Clark County until 1981 when it was merged with Overton to create the unincorporated town of Moapa Valley. The community is the home of the annual Clark County Fair and Rodeo. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department patrols the town. History Established on the west side of the Muddy River in 1865, Logandale was originally named St. Joseph. It was moved and renamed New St. Joseph, or St. Joseph #2 in 1868, by settlers driven out of their first town of Saint Joseph, Nevada on the east side of the Muddy River when it burned down. It also acquired the post office established in the old town on August 26, 1867. The new Saint Joseph like the other Mormon settlements in the Moapa Valley was abandoned in 1871 due to a tax dispute with the state of Nevada. Samuel Claridge
Samuel Claridge (December 5, 1828 – September 11, 1919) was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) who was a prominent early settler of the Muddy River Valley in Nevada and Thatcher, Arizona. Claridge was born in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, England, to David Claridge and Elizabeth Pratt Hopkins. In 1849, he married Charlotte Joy and in 1851 they joined the LDS Church. In 1853, they emigrated to Utah Territory, settling in Nephi. In 1868, Wilford Woodruff appointed Claridge to preside over the Latter-day Saints living along the Muddy River in Nevada (then in Utah Territory). The eastern border of Nevada was later shifted east, and with the attempt to charge back taxes to those living there, the Latter-day Saints moved away. Claridge moved to Kane County, Utah. Louisa Barnes Pratt
Louisa Barnes Pratt (November 10, 1802 – September 8, 1880) was a prominent advocate for women's vote and other related causes in the 19th century as well as a Latter-day Saint missionary. Early life Louisa Barnes was born in Warwick, Massachusetts on November 10, 1802 to Willard and Dolly Barnes. Her father served in the British forces during the War of 1812 although in her autobiography she alleged he was a supporter of the United States. She attended school, although found it hard to be obedient. She was sent to live with an aunt near her home when she was about 5 years of age. She and her family moved to Quebec, Canada in July 1810. Her family were members of the Church of England, and Louisa was baptized into the Episcopal Church when she was 14. Addison Pratt
Addison Pratt (February 21, 1802 – October 10, 1872) was an early Latter-day Saint convert and missionary. Pratt preached in French Polynesia from 1844 to 1848 and from 1850 to 1852, and is recognized by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as the first Latter-day Saint missionary to preach in a language other than English. Life Pratt was born in Winchester, New Hampshire. Raised a farmer, he was employed as a whaler in New England for more than a decade.
