S. B. Hough
Stanley Bennett Hough (25 February 1917 – February 1998) was a British author of science fiction, for which he used the pseudonym Rex Gordon. He also published several novels under his own name. Hough was a wireless operator on merchant and passenger ships. In World War II his ship was sunk near Algiers. Hough's works as Rex Gordon covered space travel, time travel, alien encounters and planetary colonization. His other novels concerned nuclear warfare, neo-Nazis, crime and political crisis. Hough was born in Preston, Lancashire and died in Falmouth, Cornwall. Nuclear warfare, also known as atomic warfare, is a theoretical military conflict or prepared political strategy that deploys nuclear weaponry. Nuclear weapons are weapons of mass destruction; in contrast to conventional warfare, nuclear warfare can produce destruction in a much shorter time and can have a long-lasting radiological result. Preston () is a city on the north bank of the River Ribble in Lancashire, England. The city is the administrative centre of the county of Lancashire and the wider City of Preston local government district. Preston and its surrounding district obtained city status in 2002, becoming England's 50th city in the 50th year of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. Falmouth ( ; kw, Aberfala) is a town, civil parish and port on the River Fal on the south coast of Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It has a total resident population of 21,797 (2011 census). Etymology The name Falmouth is of English origin, a reference to the town's situation on the mouth of the River Fal. The Cornish language name, ' or ', is of identical meaning. ''No Man Friday'' (also known in the United States as ''First on Mars'') is a British science fiction novel by Rex Gordon (Stanley Bennett Hough). published in 1956. The reference in the original title is to '' Robinson Crusoe'', and the story can be described as a science fiction robinsonade set on Mars. The similarity is made explicit by the first edition cover. Plot summary A British rocket, developed at minimal cost and kept secret from officialdom, lifts off from the Woomera rocket range on a mission to Mars. During the voyage, an accident in the airlock kills the entire crew except for engineer Gordon Holder, the novel's narrator, who was returning from an EVA and still in his space suit. The rocket reaches Mars but crash-lands. There, Holder learns how to produce oxygen and water, also discovering more about Martian species and nourishment.
