Ser Benfiquista
"Ser Benfiquista" (, eng, Being a Benfiquista) is the current anthem of Portuguese sports club S.L. Benfica. The song acknowledges Benfica's humble beginnings and shows that being a benfiquista (supporter of Benfica) is more than being a football fan. It is sung before every home match and sometimes during the match. It was written by Manuel Paulino Gomes Júnior and first sung on 16 April 1953 by tenor Luís Piçarra in the presence of 6,000 benfiquistas at a '' sarau'' in Benfica's old arena Pavilhão dos Desportos, with the goal of raising money to build the original Estádio da Luz. The original anthem, composed by Félix Bermudes in 1929, was called "Avante Benfica" ("Onward Benfica"). However, it was censored by the Estado Novo in 1942 because of the political connotation of the word ''avante'', which was considered an affront to the establishment ''The Establishment'' is a term used to describe a dominant group or elite that controls a polity or an organization ...

This was the first final not to include Real Madrid, who had won the previous five finals. Benfica lifted the trophy for the first time, beating Barcelona 3–2. Benfica midfielder Mario Coluna broke his nose in the eighth minute of the match; not wanting to risk further damage, when Domiciano Cavém put over a cross in the 55th minute, Coluna hung back outside the penalty area. The ball was cleared directly to him and he volleyed it home for Benfica's third goal of the match. Route to the final Five-time defending champions Real Madrid were knocked out in the first round by Barcelona, their bitter domestic rivals. After defeating Czechoslovak champions Hradec Králové in the quarter-finals, Barcelona initially drew 2–2 on aggregate with West German champions Hamburger SV in the semi-finals. Football In Portugal
Association football ( pt, futebol), the most popular sport in Portugal, has a long and storied history in the country, following its introduction in 1875 in cities such as Funchal, Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra by English merchants and Portuguese students arriving back home from studying in England. This led to the establishment of local clubs dedicated to the practice of the sport. Initially, football was played between neighbour clubs, but soon enough citywide and regional tournaments started to take place around the nation. Soon after the start of the 20th century, the need to establish which club was the best in Portugal culminated with the organizing of the " Campeonato de Portugal" (now known as "Taça de Portugal"), with subsequent bragging rights going mostly to clubs from Lisbon and Porto. Portugal's top domestic league, the Primeira Liga, was founded in 1934 and is home to internationally successful clubs such as S.L. Benfica, FC Porto and Sporting CP – the " Big ...
