Sport Lisboa e Benfica (), commonly known as Benfica, is a canoeing team based in Lisbon, Portugal. Benfica's canoeing section is composed of men and women teams. It was created amid the club's "Olympic Project" in 2010, set to develop athletes to represent Portugal at the Summer Olympic Games. Canoeing
Canoeing is an activity which involves paddling a canoe with a single-bladed paddle. Common meanings of the term are limited to when the canoeing is the central purpose of the activity. Broader meanings include when it is combined with other activities such as canoe camping, or where canoeing is merely a transportation method used to accomplish other activities. Most present-day canoeing is done as or as a part of a sport or recreational activity. Portugal At The Olympics
Portugal first participated at the Olympic Games in 1912 and has since taken part in every edition of the Summer Olympic Games. Earlier that year, the Olympic Committee of Portugal (COP, ''Comité OlÃmpico de Portugal'') was recognised by the International Olympic Committee as the Portuguese National Olympic Committee. In 1952, athletes representing Portugal competed for the first time at the Olympic Winter Games, and have only missed two editions since 1988. As of the 2020 Summer Olympics, thirty-nine Portuguese athletes have won a total of twenty-eight medals (five golds, nine silvers and fourteen bronzes) in nine summer sports. Carlos Humberto Lehman de Almeida Benholiel Lisboa Santos (born 23 July 1958), known as Carlos Lisboa, is a Portuguese former basketball player who played as a guard and forward. He is considered the greatest Portuguese basketball player of all-time. As a head coach, Lisboa most notably led Benfica from 2011 to 2017, winning 22 major titles, and from 2019 to 2021. Early life and career Lisboa was born in Praia, Cape Verde, to a Jewish origin metropolitan Portuguese father and to a German origin mother (Fernanda Lisboa Santos). Fernando Ismael Fernandes Pimenta (, born 13 August 1989) is a Portuguese sprint canoeist who has won multiple medals at the Olympic Games, World and European championships. At club level, he represents Benfica. Career Pimenta has competed since the late 2000s. His first major result came at the 2010 World Championships in Poznań, Poland, when he won the K-2 500 metres silver medal together with João Ribeiro. One year later, he contributed to the Portuguese K-4 1000 metres gold medal at the European Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, and claimed a bronze in the K-1 1000 metres. Canoe Sprint
Canoe sprint is a water sport in which athletes race canoes or kayaks on calm water. Overview Race categories vary by the number of athletes in the boat, the length of the course, and whether the boat is a canoe or kayak. Canoe sprints are sometimes referred to as flat water racing. The distances recognized by the ICF for international canoe sprint races are 200m, 500m, and 1000m. These races take place on straight courses with each boat paddling in its own designated lane. Longer marathon races do exist, notably the 5000m (also an ICF-recognized distance) – these usually have athletes starting in a large pack at a start line before paddling around a set course with marked turning points (there are no assigned lanes). Joana Sofia Barbosa Vasconcelos (born 22 February 1991) is a Portuguese sprint canoer who has competed since the 2010s. At club level, she represents Benfica. Career Born in Vila Nova de Gaia, Vasconcelos started canoeing in Clube Náutico de Crestuma, where she won the ICF Canoe Kayak Sprint Junior World Championships in K-1 1000m class that took place in Moscow in 2009. The 18-year-old then moved to Benfica in 2010, and currently studies and practises at the Center for High Performance in Montemor-o-Velho.
